Yalgaar (1992)
Yalgaar was a film directed by Feroze Khan and released by FK Internationals PVT. during October 1992. The film had an average budget and was therefore quite expensive to make. In addition to this, Yalgaar was below average at the Box Office and presumably, was the greatest disappointment of the distributors that year!
The film featured potential actors, like the famous Sanjay Dutt, Kabir Bedi (as Singhal), Manisha Koirala (Meghna), Vicky Arora and Nagma, among others. The story, basically is as follows: Rajesh`s (FK) elder brother is killed by Jaichand in a train. 5 years elapse. Jaichand is released from jail and the case moves to DEAD END! This angers Rajesh to such an extent that he swears revenge on Singhal as he doubts that he is in connection with his brother`s killing. Insp. Rajesh`s Father is Mahendra Ashwini Kumar, who is a chief officer in the police Force.
On the other hand, is Singhal, M.A Kumar`s greatest enemy. His only goal is to stop M.A Kumar from becoming CM of Police. He is a drug dealer, arms smuggler and chief of the UNDERWORLD DONS.
Singhal has two sons...the elder is Vishal (Sanjay Dutt) and the younger is Vicky (V.Arora). He, at first married his childhood girl freind, and as a result his elder son, Vishal was born. However, when she died in childbirth, Singhal was remarried to his own sister-in-law, and got his second son. Vicky has a different identity and a different name, because his mother did not want to let him be like his father. There are many differences between these two brothers, but the still love each other dearly.
Singhal loves Vicky more than Vishal. However, Vishal follows the dangerous path of his father, and becomes just like him. Vicky knows nothing of his father`s and brother`s mideeds.
Once Singhal is arrested by the police. This angers Vishal who hires a killer called Carlos to kill M.A.Kumar (the new Comissioner of Police). He is successful in his task. Still unknown to Singhal, that Vishal commanded the murder, when he recieves the news, he gets a sudden fright. He takes his family with him to Dubai, to flee the Indian Police. He also kidnaps Meghna (FK`s niece- I guess Singhal wanted to invite his death) who is Vicky`s lover.
.......The rest is the climax of the movie..........
Yalgaar was an excellent action movie. It featured very good music and great actors. Sanjay Dutt was simply mindblowing in his role, which suited the character of Vishal. The film also had a good screenplay, brilliant and crystal-clear soundtrack and a super film direction (by FK). My best song in Yalgaar is `Aakhir Tumne Aana Hai`, ironically the only song Sanjay Dutt featured in it. Yalgaar was also well-editted and the film had very little flaws in it.
However, Yalgaar failed at the box office and personally, I think these are the main reasons why it all ended badly....
1.) The role of M.A Kumar suited more FK than Mukesh Khanna. It`s obvious as, FK is and does look older than the role he was attributed. It fooled people as the make-up looked bad on screen.
2.) The starcast was somewhat inconsistent. Sanjay Dutt was a great actor and performed his role at his best! There isn`t another actor who could do what he did! Vicky Arora (as Vicky), apart from being a good dancer was an awful actor. Vicky`s role overshadowed Vishal`s role, which may have angered the public, so that the rejected the film.
3.) It was claimed in newsapapers and magazines of that time, that Yalgaar was vulgar, in terms of language and action, and about a scene of Sanjay Dutt kissing a woman in pool (or whatever), in a way indirectly discouraging people from viewing the movie- but I will simply not make any more comments on that!
4.) Some of you might or might not be aware of the personal life of Sanjay Dutt during the time of Yalgaar`s release. According to his interviews, it was his friends, or peers (why not?) who led him into a section of Hell, better known as D-R-U-G-S. Incidentally, Yalgaar was released in late 1992. What followed in early of 1993, is the Abu-Salem Case, Sanjay Dutt being linked with the Mafia for the 1993 bombings in India, actually more of an RDX-Weaponry case than any other... As a result of his arrest in 1993, the film may have suffered from the bad reputation he aquired from the mass-public or the Bollywood Film Industry itself. What`s more to be added here, is that in some articles, he was even accused of looking for public sympathy despite playing roles in films which were known to be villainous.
Anyway, apart from all this, all I`d like to say is that I enjoyed this great great great action-packed movie. Infact, I loved it so much, that I have it on DVD, VCD and even VHS!
