Performance bike...its Yamaha

I bought this machine on 19th Oct 2014. I wanted to have a quick city bike which is occasionally able to go long drive, should be able to run at a speed of 70+ for a whole day, fun to ride and fit my budget of 70k. I did not want to compromise in performance and riding pleasure. I am OK with mileage anything above 40.

I always be a Yamaha fan(had RX100 for 6 years). The only issue with Yamaha that they market their bike for so long(like Yamaha SS125 from last 6-7 years and still no 125cc bike is coming under Yamaha Tag) that after some years they feel outdated in terms of features. Performance has been always better.

So I had shortlisted Bajaj Discover 150f, SS125 and SZ-RR. I liked the Bajaj one which has many more features, good ride quality, less expensive than SZ-RR but bad quality of plastic. The problem is Bajaj has discontinued many discovers last year and I was worried if this new Discover may get discontinued in next 6 months.

SS125 is fabulous bike, the only thing it is not quickest in City. it is good highway bike. Top speed of SS125 and SZ-RR will not have much difference. Another issue is SS125 is very old bike, parts are also very old while SZ-RR got new look last year. I had already driven SZ-R of my colleague and loved it, it is seriously quick in city. As per specs or in real world also it is the quickest bike in acceleration of 30 to 80 kmph speed(including top 150cc models like Yamaha fz series). And the biggest reason - its Yamaha!

So I decided to buy SZ-RR. Build quality, looks are much better than Discover. Saddle height is a little problem, I am 5.7" only but manageable. Few important things are missing:-

  • Engine Kill switch

  • Headlight Dimmer switch(must have feature)

  • Tubeless tyres(basic feature now a days)

I have completed 400 kms now, 1st service still to be done, can not comment much. I am worried about its mileage. Till now I am getting 45-47 kmpl. I am driving softly as bike is in run in period, max speed I crossed is 70(twice) only. It is good to drive, feel confident. No major issue, only a minor issue of having sound "phat" while changing gear quickly. Hope it will be resolved during first servicing.

After 1st Service

Feels lighter in driving and riding has got smoother. Engine heating has reduced drastically. No change in mileage(42 - 45) though I am driving on higher RPM(>4000 rpm but less than 5000 rpm). I touch 60kmph mark on empty roads. Hope this number does not get lower in future. I am still not crossing 5000 rpm on tachometer. At 5000 rpm you can easily drive at 60+ kmph which is enough for me in Delhi/Noida city.
