FZ to SZ ....a smooth transition

I got my FZ16 in oct 08, first booking in Gujarat, bike’s delivery in the first lot in Gujarat and I was one of the proud owners of FZ16....but after a few months, all positives slowly became "must haves" and then a few issues like tiny seat , noisy chain, frequent punctures in rear tyre...really started bugging me.

While I did not have any issue with engine , after I sold off FZ16 , I thought of waiting for some time to get a power commuter from yamaha (being a yamaha loyal customer having an RX100 and FZ, it was obvious for me to do that..!!) for which I had some indications from some Yamaha sources.

After launch of SZ , I went to see that and did not get impressed immediately as it was a mix of all power commuters like Uni, GSR150 and some similarities with Glady as well..!! I decided to go for uni and went to book it. Uni was not available for next 2 weeks and in between I again went to Yamaha Show room and took a test drive.

I found it come comfortable to drive than FZ , it was almost same feeling as compared with Uni. I thought of booking it and then in next 2 days I booked one SZ X with grey metallic color! Got it in Oct 10 and I can say now that now I am a happy commuter.

While I haven’t driven it much extensively as for daily commuting I use my car, it is over the week ends when the SZX really moves for about 40-50 kms....almost 800 Kms done now and I have my observations here.

  1. Engine: Pick up is good, gaining speed in 3rd and 4th gear is quite nice, little knocking observed - similar to that of FZ so not worried much.

  2. Comfort: It scores heavily on this front with a big seat which can accommodate a family of 2 and a half easily. Suspensions also are nicely set up for urban drive.

  3. Style: I would say its just okay on the looks and style front and is value for money for its nice non-aggressive yet appealing style. rear split tail lamp is nice and so is tank styling though SZR is better in this dept.

  4. Price: Value for money at 59K on road I think its a good buy for both the segments (segment of UNI, GSR and a segment going for Bajaj disco 150)....
