Remember the era of superhit film like Yadon ki Baarat, Amar Akbar Anthony, etc where the plot was always the same i.e. based on Lost and Found of the family.
YPD takes it major plot from these stories only and along with the old conmen and romantic angle deliver a fun ride fr 2.5 hours.
Director Samir Karnik has 4 flops before this film, and it takes a lot of courage for the Deols to make their home production which such an director. We all know what happened with Kyun ho gaya na, Nanhe jaisalmer and vaada raha.
However said that, his film Heroes got critical acclaim but that was not enough to make it a commercially successful film. But with YPD he ll surely taste some success.
Coming to the story, the film is about an NRI, Paramveer Singh (Sunny Deol) living in Canada with his wife, two children and his mother. His mother Nafisa Ali He comes to know that his father Dharam Singh Dhillon (Dharmendra) and brother Gajodhar Singh (Bobby Deol) are conmen operating in Banaras.
Paramveer goes to Banaras for a family reunion. The other angle is brought in by Sahiba(Kulraj Randhawa) who is the love interest of Gajodhar but she being a sardarni cant marry a non Sikh guy.
Then the story is all about family reunion, Bobby winning his love and Sunnys action scene with the flavor of fun element in it.
The 1st half of the film is undesirable from an entertainment point of view because its painfully slow and gives no or very less scope of laughter, but the 2nd half just sweeps you away with its situational comedy.
The director has given all his input in making the 2nd half look better where 1st half was left completely unattended. Also few scene were not likable and could have been avoided.
The Music of the film is a bit disappointing. and when it comes from seven different music director then its a serious issue. The title track of YPD was the most likeable of all the songs.
Sonu Nigam was an apt choice for this song. Tinku jiya and Chade de Rang are strictly OK. The background music is nothing new, same goes with the cinematography. The film is shot in Banaras and Punjab.
Now a lot of scenic Beauty could have been framed by the cinematographer and the director but they faield to do so.
Acting wise, Sunny Deol steals the show. He is one of the best actor I have ever seen to do action as well as emotional scene with equal ease and comfort. great work. Dharmendra looks charming as always but somehow that perfection was missing this time which we saw in his few last ventures like Metro and Apne.
Bobby Deol was his usual self, nothing extraordinary but a good performance, Kulraj Randhwa is an extremely beautiful actress and she acts very well. She looks confident however there is way too less scope for her to act in this film. Anupam Kher and Mukul Dev were just awesome.
They come in 2nd half, mark my words u ll be in splits after they come in the film. Poli (Sucheta Khanna) takes you by surprise. she is 1st rate. Amit Mistry was wasted and so was Johnny Lever.
Coming to the two best scene of the film, I personally liked the "Well Scene" - showing colors of Punjab and another one where Sunny Deol gets drunk and comes his dialogue Jat risky after Full balti whisky.
Word of Caution - this film may not appeal to those who are unfamiliar with the tradition of Punjab or as a matter of fact not a Sunny Deol fan because you will see a lot of scene where in you ll feel larger than life action scene.
Anyways the film is a good watch, 1st half could have been better, the film then would have generated a repeat value.
