The house he had given on rent to his tenants include Saraswati(Mahima Chaudhary), a working lady, living with her mother, Usha Nadkarni, her younger sister Jyoti and brother Chotu. He initially sends a letter to the tenants asking them to vacate urgently, but there is resistance from the neighbourhood.
Upon reaching the city, he visits his house on rent and creates a ruckus but Saraswati and her family and the neighbours are adamant that they would not vacate the house since they are paying the monthly rent and until they find a similar house.Dayashankar is still adamant but is unable to do anything to make them leave. He then visits his close friend Baban(Sanjay Narvekar) but is surprised to find out that he is a juice seller and has no permanent residence. His boss, Neeraj Vora is a very mean guy who is very particular about the business and Baban is in love with his daughter. Baban asks Dayashankar to go and live with his elder sister(Apara Mehta) and brother in law(Darshan Jariwala) but he initially refuses.
Baban explains to him that by threatening or being harsh with the tenants would be of no help since this is Mumbai city, but has to carry out the task very kindly.Dayashankar tries it out but fails.
Meanwhile, Dayashankar harasses Saraswati again to vacate the house and creates a scene while travelling in the bus but gets thrown out and at the same time meets his childhood friend, Inspector O.P Yadav(Paresh Rawal), who insults him due to the scene he created and takes him in the police jeep to his house.O.P explains that he had insulted him since he was carrying out his duties as a sincere police officer and that truth and honesty are his virtues. He is also against taking a bribe or rishwat of any kind. Dayashankar brainwashes O.P by telling him that he had come to the city to sell his house, but the tenants are refusing to vacate and that they do not pay their monthly rent. This enrages O.P and he goes to the house and threatens the entire neighbourhood that they should vacate the house urgently.
Later, Saraswati visits O.P Yadav at the police station and convinces him that she pays the monthly rent of Rs 80/- regularly. This makes O.P develop a soft corner for Saraswat and later confronts Dayashankar as to why he lied to get them out of the house.
Dayashankar makes several failed and hilarious attempts to make them vacate by forcefully staying in the same house and making their life miserable and even calling goons.
Dayashankar later realised that O.P Yadav is trying to woo Saraswati which makes O.P feel ashamed but later confesses to him that he is in love with Saraswati.
Would Dayashankar be successful in getting Saraswati and her family out of the house and/ or will O.P Yadav marry Saraswati or will the end result be something else altogether?
Direction/Performances:-
Director Priyadarshan has directed this movie and has managed to get the comedy element out through all the chaos displayed.Known for superhit comedies such as Hera Pheri and Hungama, here too he manages to get all the artistes to do full justice to their roles, specially that of Sunil Shetty, Mahima Chaudhary and Paresh Rawal. Sunil Shettys portrayed his funny side very well while playing the role of a frustrated and helpless landlord while Mahima Chaudhary portrays a typical working woman who is the backbone of the family and is barely managing to get through lives chores beyond hand and mouth. Also, as portrayed in several other woman oriented movies and television shows, one would also get the feeling of her struggle in doing so while managing to keep the landlord and his hassles away. Paresh Rawal displayed a tough and honest police inspector with a dash of unintended humor.
Other characters were Sanjay Narvekar who played Baban, close friend of Dayashankar, Neeraj Vora who played his boss, Apara Mehta and Darshan Jariwala, the elder sister and brother in law of Dayashankar, Asrani, the lawyer in a very small role, Usha Nadkarni as the elderly mother of Saraswati and her siblings, Jyoti and Chotu, Saurabh Shukla as one of the goons, Anjan Shrivastav as Setji and Suhasini Mulay as O.P Yadavs sister, having smaller roles.
Music:-
This film had good songs such as the title track Sarawati Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar, which was released several weks before the movies official release. Another good song was Hasate Ho Rulate Ho featuring Sunil Shetty and Mahima Chaudhary, Hasta Hua Yeh Pyara featuring Paresh Rawal and Mahima Chaudhary. Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet, M.G Sreekumar, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, K.K and Adnan Sami lent their voices for the movie.
