My Golden Days with Yezdi 60

Initially Jawa 60 was produced by Ideal Jawa Mysore in end of 1960’s with three gears, having projected air filter? directly exposed at its front. The rider is not provided with foot pegs; instead having platform resembling scoters. Later during 1974-75 an upgraded version having 60 cc with name Yezdi 60 cc launched. This having rider foot pegs. It was also having 3 gears; 1st towards top second and third towards bottom. Amazing power. If one has studied bike riding on this bike, they could easily ride any other bikes. But colt 60 launched by 1986 is a scooterite having gear shift mechanism in the left side handle same as geared scooters. The yezdi 60 was having 6 Volt high power head lamp. This is the first bike in India launched with the name YEZDI from Ideal Jawa Company. Colt 60 was having kicker on its left side kicking forward for starting whereas Yezdi 60 was having kicker on its right side kicking forward for starting. Yezdi 60 was having cable brakes for rear wheel with beake peadal. The system was not so reliable. A good powered small two wheeler for that time. I am proud that I learnt bike riding on the Yezdi 60 CC owned by my father at the age of 15 years. It was giving 45 to 50 km per litre during that time, when people do not consider mileage as a serious issue. The Comapny was claiming 100 miles per gallon. Tyre size was 2.50x 16 for both front and rear; same that is being used by TVS 50. As such the vehicle was having goo road grip. Its rear sproket was having bigger dia. and hence the vehicle was having higher load carrying capacity. The head light resembles "Kazhutha" - donkey and people in our local area called it as Kazhutha Jawa. Our mechanic Sri. Ashraf from Karunagappally told us that its mileage can be increased much more, if we replace its rear sproket with lesser dia sproket. The vehicle was having petrol overflow problem from its carburettor and as cuh starting problems occured several times of every month. It was having coi spring for as rear shocks whereas greased telescopic spring for front suspension. As such its riding was not so comfortable as these days bikes.Central stand and silencers were not fitted fimrly to the body of the vehicles. This made much head aches to my father. The vehicle sold out by the end of December 1986 due to non availability of spares such as piston, piston rings, gaskets, oil seal, tyres etc after my father owned one Rajdoot Ranger also in the year 1983.
