I am a person who does a lot of media consumption, and YouTube is my primary source.
I purchased a new iPhone 7 Plus a few days ago and the YouTube application for iOS is just horrible. I am facing a lot of problems with this app.
You cannot randomly select streaming quality on Mobile Data but you can do so on WiFi. This is something that really agitates me. It should have been vice versa. When you are playing YouTube on your Data connection, YouTube adjusts quality as per the speed of your internet. Thus if you have a 4G connection, it will play 1080p videos. This is very irritating because it exhauts all your data. I want to play videos at 720p to preserve my data but I cannot do it on the YouTube for iOS. However, when I play videos using my WiFi, I can freely select quality of videos. However, it is useless as the bandwidth for my WiFi is unlimited.
I would be very happy if YouTube sees through this issue because we as consumers cannot always rely on WiFi networks as they are not available everywhere and so we must use out Data connection. Especially in India, where most people use Jionet, it can be really bothersome.
