Just because it is a Mani Rathnam effort coupled with ARR music does it have to be always good or hyped ?
What was so big about this movie seriously ?
while watching this one, (on DVD) half the time I was getting up for brief breaks or peeping outside my balcony to see what the loud noises were all about (I have really noisy neighbours ..). This movie never really kept me in its grip.
STORY
goes something like this...
three youths, three directions. Two youths later pair up and share a common direction. one youth is clueless about what he wants to do in life and ends up a complete loser. Three girls play respective girlfriends to the three men and two out of the three have nothing much to offer.
MY ANALYSIS
First of all I didnt like the way.. the film started and the way it was broken into three portions, each portion dealing with only with one couple. That made the start of the film very boring and very one dimensional. I wish there was a mix and match of all the three pairs and some balance of comic emotion and violence.
My feeling about the casting is that its good but in most cases very stereotyped.
Ajay devgan was straight out of his Bhagat Singh image.
a Reformer with idealistic views dreaming about a big social revolution.
Had Bhagat Singh been born in todays era.. he would have been exactly like Ajay Devgans character.
Ajay definitely does a good job, but I felt he did the stuff before in his award winning Bhagat Singh movie.
Rani Mukherjee who does the best job among the girls is again straight out of Hey Ram. Her clothes, her intimate scenes, her hairstyle everything is so similar to Hey Ram.
Kareena Kapoor was okay in certain scenes and very irritating in some other portions. Her character was more like Khushis character from the film Khushi. Bubbly, friendly and funny. Just her pouts, dances and pooish demeanour was missing and she looked more Mani Rathnam-ished... .
Esha Deol was the biggest hype in the film and the most wasted. Does announing that you are pregnant and proudly packing your bags and talking shameless things like wait and see if I am pregnant after 8 months to your aunt, make you cool ?. I still havent understood her character in the whole film.
An average performance by Esha after all the hype of Suhaasini calling her on the phone and talking to her and selecting her in Yuva. Esha also being very average in looks , looked very tired , bereft of makeup in the film.
Vivek Oberoi The less said the better. His character was not any different from Adityas character from Saathiya or even his Masti character. Hes the same flamboyant, outgoing, bratty chap as always.
I wish he would stop adding adding his tagline Yaar at the end of every sentence.
for eg: meri baat to suno yaar OR kya yaar OR aisa mat karo yaar .
He needs to stop being Vivek oberoi in his films and start emoting the character hes supposed to play
Abhishek Bachhan clearly steals the show with his magical performance.
His role is fresh from the oven and he looks like he has really worked hard to get into Lallans character. His angry young mans potrayal reminds you of Amitabh sometimes.
PROS OF YUVA
---------------------------
performances of abhishekh, rani and ajay.
convincing depiction of consequences that could be faced by todays youth upon their tyrst with politics.
good character sketch of Ajay and Abhishek.
interesting end of the movie.
CONS OF YUVA
----------------------------
1.very boring and unimpressive characterization of Kareena and Esha.
2.too much importance given to discussion of the term pregnant amongst the couples.
Eshas character gives the impression that its cool to get pregnant or keep others guessing if you are or if you arent.
Kareenas character however shrieks .. eeeeeeeeeeee at the mere mention of it.
Ranis character gets pregnant when Lallan is in jail and later gets rid of her pregnancy when he leasts expects it to happen.
Women of today can do much better than keep themselves hovering around that concept.
3.Also Lallans character ending up in Jail in the end.
Is he supposed to be like Gulshan Grover or Amrish puri ??? who usually end up in jail or die and the audience usually gives a damn ?
I thought he was one of the heroes of Yuva and represented certain section of youth. But his character was just treated like those numerous villains we have in every movie, who just kill people and end up in jail.
4.Storyline was very sketchy at times.
eg : How the hell did Lallan assume that his brother is going to kill him and instead kills him under the pretext of self defense ?
just because the brother had a pistol in his pocket ?????
If a gangster doesnt keep a pistol in his pocket what else will he keep ? a calculator ?
- Also how did Ajay come to know that Om Puri was behind all his attacks ?
There was no mention of it at any place.
Again, just because you have an old politician against you in elections and you get attacked, does that make him the sole suspect ?
Just like Dil se , (another obscure film by MR) this one too gets confusing at certain scenes and one has to keep assuming something or the other to be on the same page as the films flow.
MUSIC
--------------
was okay. Some songs like : kabhi Neem Neem and the title track Yuva are good. ARR may be experimenting with techno fusion music but my ears still like to listen to his melodious music rather than abstract tunes.
Overall Yuva is a strictly average film by M.R.
Nothing stupendous to boast of and definitely not one of the must see films.
