Grueling, intense, cruel

Sanjay Gupta arrives with dark Zinda , so don’t expect the feel-good movie of the year: This nightmarish revenge drama is grueling, intense, cruel -- the very definition of extreme cinema.

If you know the story of korean film old boy, you’ll have some sense of Zinda’s mood. These films launch a kind of assault on the audience, and it isn’t surprising to learn that Whichever side you take, you will be impressed, or appalled, by such bits of virtuoso violence as the sequence when Sanjay, armed with a hammer, and with a knife sticking out of his back, takes on a corridor full of vicious enemies.

Still, even if Zinda only intermittently coheres into a whole, there are enough must-see moments here, that the film is sure to become a cult hit.
