Some food for thought:

Is spending 40 billion USD on a sporting event worth it?

Imagine how many people can be fed with that money.

Imagine how many people can be sheltered with that money.

Imagine how many sick people can receive medical help with that money.

It receives so much attention, adulation and appreciation.

It is estimated that almost 4 billion people worldwide will read, hear or see about the Beijing Olympics.

Isn't it a criminal waste of time and human resources.

The thought, when it originated, was a noble one, but now it has been reduced to a marketing gimmick.

If you are a company, you can't mention the event by name lest the Olympic committee will sue you for 'commercial use of the name of Olympics'. But companies are smart and so they say 'Summer Games 2008'. Afterall they have to associate with the games somehow to reap the benefits and catch the 'eyeballs'.

We all love sport and it's great to see all the great sportsperson of the era congregate and compete at one venue but at the cost of 40 billion USD? It's criminal waste of money and resources.

Olympics has become just a marketing gimmick and we all love to succumb to it.

Yes there are many other events as big or bigger than these and I agree, they are an utter waste too.

The slogan this time is: One World One Dream. Are the suffering in Africa, Afghanistan and North Korea part of this world and are their dreams fulfilled by this extravaganza?

So welcome to 18 days of wasting time, money and resources.

What a celebration of waste!
