It was during the Kargil war, when the entire nation was excited with war like situation. It was the Pakistani forces along with terrorist were on attack. Most of the Indian bunkers and the Indian posts at various points were captured by the terrorist with help of Pakistani soldiers. Indian side was observing the situation and waiting for counter attack.

The young Captain Vikram Batra of 13 JAK Rifles had completed his training and had joined the Delta Company recently. Captain Batra was a brave and fearless soldier. He was a man of exceptional courage and remarkable magnitude. He was from highly educated family, always dreamed of joining the forces to serve his motherland. Captain Batra, according to his colleagues was spontaneous in carrying actions on the field against enemies. The brave man was always found some excuse to pull somebody out of his way and lead the operation, sometime single handedly - with big smile on his face. He was just 24 years when he decided to face the enemy in the deadliest region of Kargil. He was always ready to help others and had become well-known among friends and enemies for his witty one-liners!! The commanding officer had nicknamed him as 'Sher Shah'.

During the Kargil war Delta Company was given a major task of recapturing the Point 5140 the highest peak in hill area. The entire area surrounding the Point 5140 was under the control of Pakistani army along with terrorists. The operation Point 5140 was led by Captain Batra. The plan was made to recapture the Point 5140 which was at the magnitude of 17,000 feet high. In a courageous act Captain Batra led his men to the rock-cliff top from the rear end, which had surprised the enemy. The Indian soldiers climbed the top of Point 5140, regardless of continuous shelling and attacked the enemy by destroying their post completely. The Indian flag was hurled as a sign of mission successful! On the radio signal the enemy commander challenged Captain saying - "Sher Shah you will not go back alive if you stay on the top" and Captain Batra shot back -" Don't worry about us. Pray for your safety". The success at the point 5140, inspired the Indian soldiers that they attacked and recaptured two other points - Point 4077 and Point-5100. Now the two more Points 4750 and 4875 were needed to be recaptured. Captain Batra asked his Commanding officer his permission for recapturing the Points by saying.. “Sir, Ye Dil Mange More...!”

Sher Shah as he was rightly called, volunteered himself in the critical operation of recapturing the remaining Points. The Point 4875 was at the altitude of 17,000 feet high with gradient of 80 degrees. It was deadliest fight on the top as enemy was ready with full force. It was 5th of June 1999. The operation led by Captain Batra was successful in re-claiming the Point 4875. The enemy attacked again in the early morning on 7th June 1999. Lieutenant Naveen was seriously injured in the attack, but Captain Vikram Batra came to his rescue by dragging him inside - Captain Vikram Batra retorted - "You will stay inside because you are a married man having wife and kids, let me handle the situation now!!" And he went back to fight with enemies. But there was something else in the destiny. In the combat with enemy, he led his team, wiping the enemy out. But unfortunately he was hit in the chest, but he kept his gun in his hands and attacked the overpowering enemy, killing five of their soldiers and nearly completing the mission, before collapsing with words -'Jay Mata Di' !! As he succumb to the injuries which were grievous.

Captain Batra a young leader who not only showed the unstinting courage but always acted with alertness to the situation with responsibility to carry with smile on his face. He was truly an icon of the unconquerable spirit of Indian patriotism and fearlessness. Captain Vikram Batra was awarded the gallantry award Param Vir Chakra, posthumously in year 1999.

The Point 4875 today called as ‘Captain Vikram Batra Top’- a tribute and true recognition for his infinite courage and sacrifice. His services and his daring acts will keep inspiring the generations to come.

Sher Shah of Kargil - Captain Vikram Batra was daring brave man having humorous and witty side too. Before starting the mission - Point 4875, he told his Commanding Officer - "I will come back alive or wrapped in the flag but only after mission is complete." He had become familiar among the enemies too. During a cheeky exchange over radio signal the enemy commander asked him - "Sher Shah, give us Madhuri Dixit (the famous Indian actress) and we will surely leave Kashmir". And Captain Batra shot back- "Sorry, Madhuri is busy !" he fired a bullet in enemy camp, saying " From Madhuri, with love !!"
