Should Doctors Go On Strike ?

As a matter of professional ethics, doctors should not go on strike.

But yesterday it was very unfortunate in Karnataka the doctors have gone on strike demanding better pay and better working conditions. But should they be allowed to strike?

It was a show of strength of ‘Men in White’ Over 3,500 Karnataka government doctors on Tuesday submitted their resignation protesting the meager hike in salaries. The treatment of patients was, however, not affected as the doctors have given the government two weeks to either accept their demands or their resignations.

The doctors are demanding that their pay at entry level be nearly doubled, from the present Rs.18,500 per month to Rs.35,000 per month. But the government has offered a hike of between Rs.3,000 and Rs.8,000.

If the government does not meet their demands, Oct 14 will be their last working day. After that they plan to start individual clinics. The doctors also said they will start providing ‘parallel service’ to the government hospitals.

It is very sad thing to think of a doctor going on strike. Doctors have been known as those who help the sick and will do anything to see their patients healed. They are to be committed to their profession which is really a calling and this calling requires a great sacrifice.

We understand the real value of the service doctors provide. We all understand and support the doctors who are forced by the rigid Government policies & corrupt politicians to take such a drastic step. After all the hardship they go through the return is so discouraging. This is one of the main reasons that many efficient doctors of our country are serving in other nations.

Doctors are highly educated people and as such they should be rewarded with a decent salary and working conditions. We do agree & appreciate that Doctors play an important role in our lives. We however do not agree that they should be going on strike.

What will happen to the thousands who need their help in countries whose health services are already strained?

Doctors should never be allowed to strike, they have a commitment to the people to heal them.Doctors should be more concerned with healing the sick and keeping people healthy than about their own circumstances. There is no right to strike against the public's safety anywhere and at anytime.

If the state has the financial resources to look after their doctors they should look after them well.

Doctors shouldn't go on strike for the best interest of the people. Teachers & Doctors play a very important role in our society. They shape nations.I wish they would not have to go as far as striking. They should talk with the government officials or find another alternative way to prevent the problem.

And one final request to the doctors,before going on strike, doctors should request angels of death to go on holiday too.
