This movie has got to be one of the most thought provoking movies I have ever seen in my life.
This slick flick by Richard Linklater stars keanu reeves, robert downey jr, winona ryder in well etched roles for each of the characters.
The movie is adapted from a book my Philip.K.Dick which is set in not so distant future where in a undercover cop( reeves) starts using a dangerous new drug and as a result of that starts to lose his sense of existence and identity. He stays in a ppartment along with his ecentric friend( downey Jr).
The flim starts at a slow pace but as it begins to unfold we start to understand the true nature of the new drug and people involved in its use and manipulation. The flim kicks in the 2nd half towards a exciting climax.
The major high point of this movie is that the entire movie is rotoscoped, which gives it a whole new dimension. The rotoscoping feature gives it the special extra attention. The script is brilliant and taut along with some of the most well writtten lines ever in the movie.
Ill sign off with two quotes from the movie:
"D. Substance D. "D" is dumbness, and despair, desertion-desertion of
you from your friends, your friends from you, everyone from everyone.
Isolation and loneliness. and hating and suspecting each other, "D"
is finally death. Slow death from the head down. Well. thats it.
"
"What does a scanner see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does it
see into me, into us? Clearly or darkly? I hope it sees clearly,
because I cant any longer see into myself. I see only murk. I hope for
everyones sake the scanners do better. Because if the scanner sees
only darkly, the way I do, then Im cursed and cursed again. Ill only
wind up dead this way, knowing very little, and getting that little
fragment wrong too.
