Get a machine with a greater energy efficiency

Few of us can be capable of rational thought in summers without an airconditioner. The Mantra in buying an airconditioner is to select a model that will cool well & keep the electricity bills under control.

AC’s basically come in two types -

1] The Window Model - Usually fitted in the window of a room. The cooling & compressor units are housed together in a single cabinet.

2] The Split Model - The cooling unit & the compressor are seperate. Split AC’s are usually costlier than their Windows counterpart & are used to cool relatively larger areas.

We as consumers should be aware of the EER or the energy efficiency ratio. EER determines Power consumption. Higher the EER, lower the power consumption [ higher EER models will cost more ].

Checklist before you buy an AC -

1] Decide tonnage on the basis of the room size.

2] Go for an AC with a Higher EER, a power efficient model.

3] Look for a model with sliding or removable fronts for easy cleaning.

4] look for additional functions such as energy saver function, fan only speed, remote control, tempreture precision adjustments, sleep mode & auto restart.

A standard model is a 1.5 tonne window model.

I use a LG LW-N1860BC. It features a rotary compressor, antibacterial filter [not of much use] & an EER of 9.7. I paid 19, 000/- Rs for the same
