Good films rarely come in hindi movies. But this year seems to be a lucky one for indian cinema, as we had quite a couple of good movies releasing this year. We had the brilliantly made Lagaan, and now we have with the latest release Dil Chahta Hai (My Heart Loves), another superbly made film. What is interesting is both the films feature Amir Khan, who again comes up with a flawless performance..but more about that later! After watching this movie yesterday, I immediately decided to pen it and write a review on this beautiful movie.
The Story
The story must known to almost everyone by now. Nonetheless, I will again re-iterate it my way. The story is basically about friendship, and how love changes the meaning of their friendship. It revolves around 3 friends -- Akash (Amir Khan), a non-belieiver in love and absolute freek, who loves playing pranks on others. Sameer ( Saif Ali Khan) who happens to be cool guy, and falls in love with every girl he meets! Siddharth ( Akshaye Khanna) is a serious, fun loving and most matured of the three friends.
The friends are the closest pals as they can be. However, once they graduate, they realize that they are now on threshold of a new life. While Akash tries to flirt with whomsoever he feels, Sameer falls in love with every girl and makes promises galore. However, the first to fall in love truly is Siddharth who falls in love with a much older divorced woman, who happens to have similar interests in painting as he does. When Akash tries to make fun of such a relationship, Sameer reciprocates rather strongly, and the two break off on a silly matter. Then the very next day, Sameer goes off to a different place, while Akash flies off to Sydney to manage his dads business. The three who are now apart, continue with their life, and each of them come across their love. Akash finds his true love in Sydney, while the comic Sameer finds himself a suitable girl, whom as you guessed it, falls in love!...but this time he know its for real! However, what happens to Siddharths love, I wont disclose here, because I think I wouldnt be doing justice if I wrote it down here...it has to be seen on screen.
The three friends meet again towards the end, after nearly 3 years. They realize that they have changed in so many ways and how the time spent before have just become memories. Akash and Sameer realize that they probably ruined their friendship for a silly reason, and it wasnt a reason to break their glorious friendship. The three friends then again stick to gether.
Direction
Farhan Akthars direction is simply impeccable. He carries the movie with ease, and looks as if he were directing his tenth film, even though this is his first! The comedy is handled brilliantly, and it is not slapstick comedy. Its cool, intelligent comedy, and this is what makes for a good entertainer! The second half progressively becomes serious, and also slower. However, all the scenes are brilliantly handled, especially check out the ones where Akash realizes he is in love, and he talks with his father, or the way Siddharth calmly tells his girl about his love for her, or the comic way in which Sameer and his girl realize they are in love!! The only problem however, is the slow pace in second half, and the love story of Akash becomes quite melodramatic towards the end. Overall, a great piece of direction.
Music
Music is just great, and suit the mood of the movie. They are very well written too. The title song, and Woh Ladki hain kahan are very good. Check out the picturazations of these songs, especially the woh Ladki and Tanhai.
Technicalities
Again superb. The backgroud score is good though quite less in the movie. The Look of the movie is very posh and modern. The dresses are amazing...and the hair-dos of each hero is unique and stylish! the choreography on Woh ladki.. is innovative and beautiful. Art director also has managed to capture Sydney beautifully.
Performances
Lastly to the performances...this is one place I cant singularly say that this guy has acted better! All the three heroes have done a brilliant job of their roles. This has to be a career best performance by Akshaye Khanna (Siddharth) and Saif Ali Khan ( Sameer). However, its Amir Khan again, who walks with most wittiest and most funny parts of the film. His is again a flawless performance, and he himself mentions it in the movie that Perfection ko improve karna mushkil hain! ( Its difficult to improve perfection! ). The heroines in their roles are very good too, but the whole charm of the movie is completely dominated by the friends! The characters jell, as if they were the best pals in real life as well!!
I wanted to write some more about the movie, but decided against it! Instead I would ask you to rush to the nearest theatre, and enjoy the movie! Do watch this movie at least once. This movie is a toast to friendship and love. Its a beautiful lesson on Friendship and Love!
Happy Viewing!!!
