Budapest - A Cheaper Version Of Vienna

Budapest is a stunning city when seen during the hours of darkness. There is particularly good lighting on the major buildings to add to the special atmosphere. If you’re looking for somewhere for a romantic break, this is the ideal spot!

The city has much going for it. Here you get the chance to see the Danube close up. It divided the once separate cities of Buda and Pest. Buda is a mixture of old streets and viewpoints over the city while Pest is the modern centre of commerce and the government.

Getting There

The city is becoming more popular as a weekend break destination and there are direct flights from major UK airports. It also has good rail links with mainland Europe.

Travelling Around The City

As with many Eastern European cities, public transport is of an extremely high quality. It is cheap, efficient, and gives good coverage of the city. Try and make the most of the opportunity to travel on a tram too as they are something of a rarity in the UK these days.

What To See

  • Castle District (Varhegy)-there is a cable car which will save you the walk to the top of the hill. The castle itself has a very unfortunate history. It was built in the 13th century and has twice been destroyed. It is well worth spending few hours wandering around this area and also seeing one or two of the museums in this area such as the Historical Museum if you are visiting in winter or just spending the time admiring the scenery outside in summer if your time is restricted.

  • St Stephen’s Basilica - it is the city’s largest church and has a Christ like depiction of St Stephen on the high altar. For some of the best views of the city you must climb the 323 steps up a spiral staircase in the tower. It is well worth the climb for a 360 degree view of the city.

  • Fisherman`s Bastion - this consists of a tower that gives a great view across the Danube. It is one of the most frequently shown images of the city. It is also one of the most romantic spots in the city!

  • Parliament building - A neo-Gothic building situated on the banks of the River Danube. It is the home of the Hungarian parliament.

  • A River cruise - this will give you the chance to say you have cruised on the Danube (and at a fraction of the cost of a similar trip in Vienna). The city looks stunning from the water and you will have the opportunity to see the bridges of the city at close range.

  • St Margarets Island - if you have time after all of your sightseeing this is the perfect place to chill out on a hot summers day.

Eating And Drinking

There are many of the usual chains that you find everywhere. Give McDonalds a wide berth and visit one of the many native restaurants. You really must try goulash in its home place and for red wine lovers be sure to wash it down with a bottle of Bulls Blood wine.

Summary

This is the perfect city for a long weekend. There is plenty to see and do and it can also prove to be an romantic alternative to Paris. The Hilton is a great hotel to stay in located close to the Fisherman’s Bastion - but it is a little pricier than other accommodation in the city.

It is certainly a cheaper alternative to Vienna
