Movie Review Of Koi Mil Gaya

Psst - This section will contain some inside trivia about the film.

Quotes - Good one liners from the movie.

Oops - Goofs From the movie.

Director – Rakesh Roshan

Screenplay – Satyajit Ray, Melissa Mathison, Hal Barowwd, Jerry Belson, John Hill, Matthew Robbins, Steven Spielberg, Rakesh Roshan, Honey Irani, Robin Bhatt, Sachin Bhowmick and Javed Siddiqui.

Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) is a scientist in Australia has devoted his whole life in trying to establishing contact with life from planets outside earth. One day he does establish contact and when he goes to the Space organisation to show the senior Scientists his findings, they laugh it out. Dejected, he goes home in the car with his pregnant wife Sonia (Rekha). In a bizarre accident he looses his life and the results of the accident is such that Sonia later delivers a mentally challenged child, Rohit (Hrithik Roshan). They soon shift to a small town in India, Kasauli. When he grows up, even though Rohit is 21 years old, he has a mind of a 8 year old kid. He plays around with a group of kids. They decide to play prank on new comer in town, Nisha (Priety Zinta). Nisha gets angry on Rohit and along with Lover Raj (Rajat Bedi) bashes Rohit. When she comes to know that Rohit is mentally challenged she feels sorry for him and they become very good friends. One day while playing with Sanjay Mehra’s computer, they unknowingly establish contact with extra terrestrial beings. This leads to an UFO coming over the town. The local Chief OF police, Inspector Khan (Mukesh Rishi) finds out that an alien has remained behind. What he does not know that Rohit and Nisha have befriended the alien. The Alien has supper human powers which heals wounds and also gives mental and physical power to Rohit. This helps him get over his mentally challenged intellect and also bash up the bad guy, Raj. Typical Good versus evil movie. Hrithik Rohsan has given a very good performance (Although towards the latter part of the movie he hams up). Priety Zinta, Rekha, Johnny Lever, Mukesh Rishi and Rajat bedi have given good performances. The Special effects are above average by Indian Standards. The movie could have easily done without the songs. In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is the king. This is the only reason that Rakesh Roshan’s Koi Mil Gaya is a big hit and is cut above the regular trash that is made in Hindi Film Industry. (I am not including films like 88 Antop Hill or Ramgopal Varma associated films like Darna Marna Hai or Bhoot as they are of a very different and high standards which will take ages to reach by regular directors like Rakesh Roshan or Yash Chopra). Largely inspired from Steven Spielberg’s ET and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the third Kind. The sad part of the movie is that even though takes inspiration from such a classic film like ET, they still make the alien do dance and song scenes. This really irritates. Watch out for a stand up performance by Hrithik Roshan in a scene where he shows his intellect to his computer Science Teacher.

Psst -

1) As always, the original writers of ET and Close encounter of the 3rd kind were never credited in the movie but I have done that.

2) Et did not have any established actors or actresses in the movie. The kids were the stars. Something like this would not have run in an Hindi film that is why Rakesh Roshan decided to have the character of Hrithik Roshan be mentally challenged.

3) The Accent by Hrithik Roshan was developed by him and no one asked him to develop such an accent.

4) Rakesh Roshan wanted Hrithik Roshan to reduce lots of weight for the role of a 21 year old man with a 8 year old mind in the movie. This was not possible as he was shooting for 3 films simultaneously that is why he wore baggy style clothes and a weird hair style.

5) Special Effects were shot and developed in Australia by Mark Klobe and Craig Mumma.

6) Director Trademark :- Slapstick Scene. (The one at the dinner party).

7) A MS writer crazyplaywright just told me, that ET was originally written by Styajit Ray. Later I found out that since Satyajit Ray did not have that much funds to make a big budget movie like ET, he sent his script to hollywood, and the rest as they say, is history.

8) The first person to see the Entire movie after the release was our Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who is said to have loved Hrithik Roshan’s performance. A special forst day screening was held in Bombay attended by the entire film crew for the kids of Spastic Society of India.

Quotes -

1) ’’Agar normal log tum logo ki tarah hotey hai, then I am proud that my son is abnormal.’’

2) ’’Main Duniya main pehla sindhi rahuga jo khud hi apna nuksaan karta hai.’’

3) ’’Mujhe Bournvita chahiye.’’

4) ’’Tum log bhi apni maa ka doodh pe ke aao.’’

5) ’’Computer ne insaan ko nahi, insaan ne computer ko banaya.’’

Oops -

1) It is impossible to get drunk on having just a sip of Alcohol. How does Rohit get so drunk when he just about tastes rum ?

2) In one scene Hrithik Roshan’s shirt’s sleeves get torn when his muscles start growing. In the next scene with Priety Zinta his shirt is normal. In the next scene in his house it is torn again.
