One of Nokias better phones

I got this phone immediately after losing my 6600.

I had put in NO research before I got this phone - was too depressed about losing my last one, so went to a shop, asked the dealer what phone was good and had Symbian.

Unfortunately for me, this guy didn’t know that the 6230 is a series 40 phone so is based on Nokias proprietary OS rather than Symbian.

On the upside, I got lucky in that this phone is VERY good.

Capabilities

It’s got an mp3 player.

Comes with a 32 MB MMC - keep the mp3 quality low and dump LOADS of music on it.

The sound quality through the headset is exceptional.

The camera’s decent - it’s a phone not a cam though, so don’t expect any major shots with this!

Video size is limited by the space available, and the quality of the video could be a bit better - again... it’s a phone though don’t expect camcorder quality here.

The Voice recorder can be used as a Dictaphone - you need to have the phone relatively close to the person you’re recording.

You can record a conversation while it’s happening - there’s a ’blip’ sound every 10 seconds or so that both parties hear but doesn’t get recorded.

Bluetooth’s good for connecting to the comp.

The range could use some help. 10m is the max I’ve taken this from any BT device before it disconnects.

It comes with two really bad games on the phone, but has 3 more on the CD (bounce is on the CD)

Plays amr, mid, 3gp, mp3 and a few other formats.

The keys are easy to press except the middle button on the direction pad - takes a bit of getting used to.

The contacts can have pictures and quite a few details associated with them.

Voice tags work pretty well, and can be setup for things other than calling people - I’ve set it so that if I say ’’Radio’’, the radio starts, ’’Bluetooth’’ activates BT... You get the picture...

As with most Nokias, it’s extremely sturdy. Throw it, drop it, bang it around, trip and chuck it in mud... whatever... switch off, clean, dry out and it’s back in biz - I wouldn’t test this out with such an expensive phone... what can I say? I’m sort of clumsy and don’t really like to pamper stuff that I’ve got.

The best thing is that I’ve only managed to find only ONE bug on the phone (unless you count that it’s restarted on its own 3 times since I got it)

Nokia’s getting notoriously bad at testing their phones. This one’s been pretty well tested.

The bug I found - in the goto menu, if you try to remove ’’Change outgoing line’’, you can’t. It gets removed for a while then after you restart its back - not many folks use the goto menu, so it’s not such a big issue.

Functional Irritation

Voice recorder’s limited to 3 mins of sound per recording

There are no controls to move backwards or forwards in audio or video files. You just have to sit there and wait to reach the point you wanted to navigate to.

conference calling isn’t supported - I had this on the 6600, so I do miss it a bit.

I can’t set the message space to the MMC, so in case I want to receive a large file over BT, I have to make sure I’ve got enough free phone memory.

When you plug in the headset, the message tone volume automatically drops to almost nothing, and this can’t be changed - maybe this has been changed in the newer firmware that’s out.

All in all, it’s got all the features most folks would need... and then some more...

It’s the perfect upgrade from a 6610 - another pretty good phone. It IS a bit expensive for the functionality. I got mine at 16750, so would have liked it to be Symbian based - lots more stuff you can do with those: D
