Nokia - simply wind up, you cannot make phones

I am literally forced to write this review just so that all those who upgrading to touch screens / smart phones can think again before buying a Nokia.

I brought a Nokia X6 last june and was so excited at a fantastic bargain. For the price I paid and the features I got, this was a real treat. Icing on the cake was the OVI music subscription for 1 year where I could download unlimited songs!

Where Nokia has really lost it is the entire experience that the user goes through in the cycle of owning and using a Phone. Nokia must realise that merely offering features is not enough. The experience that the end user goes in using these features makes a huge difference eventually.

My pointers:

1) Activating OVI music subscription was a pain in the wrong place(a**). It never gets activated straightaway, only after mails to Nokia support and constant followup it gets activated.

2) Initial firmware released on the phone was a disaster. Phone was not stable resulting the erratic touchpad response with missed calls & blank messages to contacts. This happened many times with major embarrassment. I have just upgraded the firmware and am keeping my fingers crossed. Already signs are appearing whereby I am sure this wont last for more than 1 week. Then I have a very good case against Nokia and so called Nokia Care.

3) The phone cannot handle too many applications. So if you have installed more than 2-3 applications, better watch out. The phone will be very unstable & slow.

4) If you have crossed 80 photos in picture gallery, then the phone takes hours to generate the thumbnails!

5) There is no way I could backup the downloaded music from OVI store with license key. Although the backup software did provide this option after backing up and restoring I discovered that license keys were not backed up! Had to download key 1 by 1 for each and every track as and when I played.

6) Upgrading OVI maps is also a disaster. Phone cannot handle latest version of OVI maps. Whats the use of a smart phone when you cannot upgrade software?

7) This phone is just not suitable if you are into heavy texting and mailing.

8) It is impossible to read beyond first few lines of mail. Scrolling is pathetic.

9) Finally the Nokia Care - how wonderfully they care for people. Dont they have the basic curtesy of offering the user to backup data? Why should the onus of backing up data be on the end user? I will tell you why. It takes at least 2 hours to back up data and another 2 hours to restore data? Why should Nokia spend time in backing up data?

I can go on and on but I am sure you have got my point. If you need a feature loaded phone which you can show to others and boast about, you can go for this phone. But if you need something that really works, something that you can really rely upon in times of need. then look somewhere else. Nokia has lost it out clearly. By packing too many features in the tiny body, it doesnot help the end user if those features cannot be used for something that it is meant for.

Nokia has two options: Think about end user and the overall end user experience. Else, pack up and shut down.

Buying this phone has made me a lot wiser. There wont be any other Nokia in my life. At least not in this present form.
