The biggest names in animation- Disney Pixar and Dreamcast. Disney Pixar of course has made excellent movies like The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and so on. You might think that there is one big name missing from this all time best list; Shrek! And Shrek is made by Dreamcast animation, not Disney Pixar. And the sequel to the movie, Shrek 2, was a hit. I just loved the movie. It was so humorous and cute! Even though this movie is now quite old, I’m writing a review on it, please read it fully.
Lets start with the story. This takes off from where the first part finished. For those who haven’t seen the first movie, here is a brief summary. Princess Fiona is locked in a tower far away, and protected by dragons, soldiers, etc. And the person who rescues her will marry her. And Shrek, the ogre, accompanied by Donkey, were the first to find her, contrary to Fiopna’s expectations of a ’Prince Charming’. Then finally even she becomes an ogre and marries Shrek. Now towards the second part. They are just returning from their Honeymoon when they recieve a message from Fiona’s parents. They are the emperors or the kingdom of Far Far Away. The message invites them to their kingdom so that they can recieve the blessings of Fiona’s parents. But Shrek has doubts over whether this would be practical, since they will be expecting a ’Prince Charming’ and not an ogre. Somehow Fiona persuades him to come along.
After a long journey they reach there, and things go wrong. Shrek doesn’t go along well with Fiona’s father. Now starts the real story. Shrek misunderstands Fiona, and is hurt. Then lured by a trick, he is lost in the forests. The quest of Shrek is to find ’Fairy godmother’ and get a happiness potion, then things take an unexpected twist. I am leaving it with this for now. Meanwhile, Prince Charming reaches the tower (where the Princess was locked before) but finds no one there. Then he finds that Shrek married her. His mom, the Fairy godmother plots evil plans to kill Shrek. It is difficult to explain even the basic story withourt giving the full plot, so I’m leaving it here.
The friend of Shrek, the Donkey gives tonnes of humor. The movie is so very lively and fun filled. Then the excusive apprearances of some ’celebrities’ in the movie makes it so cute! Wondering who the celebrities are? Well, Cinderella, Thumbelina, Puss in boots, Ginger breadman, Pinnochio, and lots more! It is so much fun seeing the movie. Then the potraying of the character of Donkey is done delightfully well. Introducing a Fairy Godmother was a master of a move. The part where Donkey gets jealous of Puss in boots is really cute. Their relationship is adorable.
Quality animation is crucial to the success of such a movie. And though Shrek doesn’t break barriers in this aspect, it is really good. Some of the faces of the humans are incredibily realistic! But don’t worry, the animals and Shrek are cartoonish enough. The background scenery both in the forest and in the kingdom are animated well. To conclude, it may not be as good as some recent Disney Pixar movies but it is very good by itself.
Shrek 2 is a good sequel to the first part. It will definitely be enjoyed by children, and even some youthful adults will like it. Watching the movie is a refreshing experience. I can’t find any particular cons in this movie, and most of them will be very minor ones. A good plot backed up by good direction and animation makes it a cute, humorous and interesting movie. I don’t think you will be able to catch it in the theatres right now, but you can very well get a VCD and watch it. I am sure it will be an exhilerating experience.
