Must Visit Place - Singapore

Why person go out of the home town ? Holiday? if yes, What kind are you looking for?

If you want to experience the luxury and comfort of a 1st world country, Singapore is a great place to visit. Its a showcase of everything that India can aspire to be - clean, organised (sometimes too much:-), safe and comfortable.

The best Things about Singapore is

  1. The clean and wide roads, the expressways, the ERP tolls, the swipe cards in cabs and other trappings of an advanced nation. From the time you start from Changi Airport towards the city center, you’re met with wide roads lined with trees and bereft of any litter. The eight lane roads that link the city to the airport is another wow

  2. The rows and rows of shopping malls that line Orchard Road (and pretty much everywhere) are a delight to the shopping freak!

  3. Then there is Singapore Botanical Gardens - the Orchids here are fabulous. You must visit this place in the morning and round up a walk in greens with a sumptuous breakfast in the restaurant in the Gardens.

last but not the least - The icing on the cake is the Changi Airport - I would rate it the best in the world. Its efficiency and scale is pure genius.

The other must visit place for those looking for bargains is Mustafa. Its on Serangoon Road in Little India. This shopping plaza houses everything from CTVs, Hi-Fis, Computers to cameras and mobile phones at prices that beat most of the places in Singapore.

Hmmm, what are the other things that I like about Singapore????? The MRT is an eye-opener for traffic weary Mumbaiites. The train line ferries most of Singapore but is so clean and organised that I wish Mumbai Locals would achieve a fraction of it.

Well, for starters, most things in Singapore are man-made and artificial. Even the trees lining the roads are grown somewhere else (most probably in Malaysia) and then transported to Singapore and just propped up on the road-side. This artificiality glares you in the eye at Sentosa, at the Night Safari, at Ice City, at most places.

The other thing is the size of the place. Being a city-country means you can’t travel more than 30 minutes by road without hitting either the sea or the international borders.

The strict discipline in the country would attract you. There is some merit in being organised and structured but in Singapore, I feel the government goes a little too far. There are fines for too many things, there are rules governing mostly everything, they don’t show Sex and the City on HBO here and various things that appear jarring to a free spirited Indian like me.

Overall, I would say that Singapore is a great one time experience for those Indians who have mostly stayed in small towns - its quite a WOW factor with its new age gadgets and spick & span urban culture.

But if you are looking for a great time with nature, the animal world and marine life - you’ll be disappointed. The Night Safari is an apology of a Safari; its a glorified Zoo. The underwater world in Sentosa is really a let down - too much hype, too little to show. Sentosa is an artificial island with artificial beaches.
