Now Known As Durham Tees Valley Airport

Teesside Airport is probably one of the less well known airports in the UK. It is located in the North East of England around 12 miles from Middlesbrough, 8miles from Stockton-On-Tees and 4 miles from Darlington.

  • Getting There

The airport is just off the A66 which has good access to both the A19 and A1(M). Road is your best option of getting there as the rail service to the station just near to the airport has very few services stopping there. Darlington offers the main rail connection option followed by a 5 mile taxi ride to the airport. A bus service is in operation from Teesside and from Darlington. They do operate on a fairly regular basis and also seem to take the strangest of routes.

  • Parking

Compared to many airports it is relatively expensive to park at Teesside Airport. Recently for 26 hours of parking we had to pay £16. The car park is close to the terminal (just across the road) and so there is no need for buses. If you are dropping off or picking up somebody from the airport the first 20 minutes parking are free.

  • Facilities

The airport has recently had many additions to it. For a small airport it has relatively good facilities - newsagents, restaurant, bar, travel agents, gift shop and duty free (tax free shop).

  • Disabled Facilities

This is the main area that lets the airport down as of January when I last flew from the airport, the only way onto the plane for wheelchair users was to be carried up the steps. There is no lift available. However, if you can climb the steps in your own time it is worth pointing out this to staff. They will let you go onto the plane ahead of able bodied passengers.

  • Destinations

You can travel to almost anywhere in the world from Teesside using one of the three main carriers at the airport - KLM, BMI Baby and Ryanair. It is also a popular choice for charter flights with many of the main destinations being offered. It has an ever expanding winter programme to save that usual trip to Newcastle or Manchester. Ryanair is the only budget airline in the north east with cheap flights to Dublin on offer.

  • Formalities

This is one area where the staff excel at the airport. It is the place where I have had to wait the shortest length of time to check-in, go through passport control and collect baggage.

  • Summary

If you live locally this is one of the best airports to fly from. The car parking is inexpensive and the staff in the airport are extremely friendly. It is designed with disabled passengers in mind with the exception of the lack of a lift (though I am sure that this will soon be recitifed). It is Probably one of the best regional airports I have ever used.
