Once again its time to choose The top guys. This time it is from the music directors. Each music director has his/her own quality. For me these are my favorites. While I am not saying, that the others are bad. Its just that these are who I listen to.
1)Naushad: This man made magic with Mohammed Rafi. The twosome have really brough magic into the film industry by way of various moving compositions.The magic woven is so strong that generations today and generation next will listen and enjoy the sheer orchestration, the poetry and the velvet voices. Amongst his many memorable songs, my personal favorites are as follows
a) Madhuban me Radhika b) Ek shahenshah ne banwake haseen Tajmahal(This song is beautiful) c) Do sitaron ka zameen
d)Man Tarpat hari darshan And many more songs from films like Baiju Bawra, Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan, Dulari, GangaJamuna, Dastan and others
2)S.D.Burman: This man has also given sum some gems. He has used folksy tunes as well, and each song is a class of its own. The songs I like amongst many others are
a)Hai apna dil to awara b)Jaane woh kaise log the c)Hum Bekhudi me tum ko pukare d)Jalte hai jiske liye e)Roop tera Mastana f)Tum na jane kis jahan me g)na tum hame jaane h)Khilte hai gul i) Phoolon ke rangse j)Kya se Kya ho gaye.Complete film albums like Guide, Aradhna, Jewel Thief, Tere Ghar ke samne, Pyasa, Kagaz ke phool. Each song in these albums has a classic status. Such was the genius of this man
3)O.P.Nayyar: The hat man is the composer of many lilting melodies.And all his songs feature mostly Asha Bhosle and Rafi sahab. Be it a teasing number or a fun song, O.P was in his element. Some of my favorites are
Diwana hua badal, ye lo main hari piya, babuji dheere chalna, maang ke saath tumhara, Thandi hawa kali ghata, piya piya piya more jiya, jawaniya ye mast mast, chain se humko kabhi
Albums like Phir wahi dil laya hun, Tumsa Nahin dekha, ek musafir ek hasina, the classic kashmir ki kali are all great albums.
4)Chitalkar Ramchandra: Not many are aware of who he is.But mention a few popular songs, and u are aware of his genius. He has given music for films like Albela, Anarkali, Navrang etc.As it is the songs mentioned above are enough to jog your brain cells into remembering the magic of the songs. My personal favorites are all the songs of Albela and Navrang, and the fun song Ina Mina Dika.
5)Shankar Jaikishen: These guys literally ruled the hindi film industry for 2 decades, and it is no wonder they got 9 filmfare awards.Generally you can relate to them with a lot of Raj Kapoor films. Films like Anari, Jis Desh me ganga behti hai, Aah, Chori Chori, Shree 420.Among other films u have Jab Pyaar kisise hota hai, Basant Bahar, Asli Naqli. Each of the albums mentioned above have magnificent songs. Some of my personal favs are: Ehsan tera Hoga mujhpar, ayemere dil kahin aur chal, sur na saje, aaja sanam, the fabulous kisi ke muskurahato pe ho nisar, tujhe jeevan ki dor se, zindagi ek safar hai suhana, mudmudke na dekh, ae gulbadan, bhawre ki gunjan(I love this song), dil tera deewana hai sanam .There are many more, but itd require a llot of space.
6)Salil Chowdhury: This man is generally well known for his compositions for films like Madhumati, Do bhiga zamin,
anand, musafir.
My personal favorites from this man: the entire Anand album, Madhumati album, janeman janeman tere do nayan,
koi hota jisko apna, jaago mohan pyare, ae mere pyaare watan, aansoo samajhke kyo mujhe, and itna na mujhse tu pyaar badha.(this is one of my fav duets)
7)Madan Mohan: In many of Lata Mangeshkars concerts, she speaks warmly of this composer.She calls him her brother.Well, truly madan mohan has used Latas voice fabulously to give us a treasure of songs.He specialised in the ghazal genre, and all his songs have a special touch. My favorites are: aye dil mujhe bata de, kaun aaya mere manke dware, unko yeh shikayat hai - adalat, agar mujhse mohabbat hai, woh bhooli dastaan, chirag dil ka jalao, dil dhoondta hai, hai isi me pyaar ki arzoo, hum hai mataaye koocha. fabulous
8)Laxmikant Pyarelal: This duo was at the top in the 70s and 80s. HEre are some of my personal favorites of these composers: Mere Mehboob kayamat hogi, hasta hua noorani chehra, Aaj Mausam bada, Jhilmil Sitaron ka, Mere Dil Me aaj kya hai, pathar ke sanam, Ruk Jaana Nahin, Woh hai zara Khafa, Yeh Jeevan hai.
9) R.D Burman: No List would be complete without including this person. While he was more famous for bringing a western beat into the songs, his classical compositions are also noteworthy. This man has left a void now, when he passed away after 1942, a Love story. My personal R.D. Favorites are: Tujhse naaraz nahin zindagi, mera kuch saaman, aane wala pal, Songs from Amar prem - all of them, From Kati Patang, Mere Jeevan Saathi, churaliya hai, tum bin jaoon kahan, Phoolon ka taaron ka - Kishore, Chand mera dil, raat kali ek khwab me aayi, Aapki aankhon me kuch, Zindagi Ke safar me guzar, naam gum jayega, do lafzo ki hai, bade acche lagte hai, ek din bik jayega maati ke mol.
Each of his songs have a kind of magic.
10) A.R.Rehman: This man made his mark in Tamil films. And he has indeed come a long way since. Many critics had commented that his craze would not last long, that his gizmo music had a short stay. But This young man has silenced his critics over a period of time. In my favorites list I will also include Tamil albums, cause they are good.
Albums - Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Duet(The sax solo is fab in the song Anjali). My favorite hindi albums would be Lagaan, Dil Se, Rangeela - moreso the song - Hai Rama yeh kya hua, Bombay - the song tu hi re, Taal.
Amongst others Id also like to give a mention to Jatin-Lalit. Their songs in Khamoshi were a delight, as also, two songs from yes boss, a couple from Kuch kuch hota hai, and my favorite one Aur Kya from Phir bhi dil hai hindustani.
