Movie Review Of The Legend Of Bhagat Singh

Psst - This section will contain some inside trivia about the film.

Quotes - Good one liners from the movie.

Oops - Goofs From the movie.

Director - Rajkumar Santoshi

Screenplay - Rajkumar Santoshi, Anjum Rajabali and Kultar Singh.

Third, and the best, of the four Movies to be released on the life of Bhagat Singh. Rare movie making which starts and ends in a flashback. Starts on the day Bhagat Singh (Ajay Devgan), Sukhdev(Sushant Singh) and Rajguru(Santosh) are hanged and their bodies are secretly chopped and burnt and goes back to his childhood where a young bahagat singh is awed by Mahatma gandhi and his non-coperation movement. When gandhi takes back his support of the Non-Coperation Movement after the chaura chauri incident, Bhagat Singh is Heartbroken. Many Small details of Bhagat Singh’s Life are shown in this movie which are not shown in any Bhagat Singh Movies. Possibly every detail is covered right from his friendship with Mentor Chandrashekar Azad (Akhilendra Mishra), His relationship with his father Kishen Singh(Raj Babbar) and Mother Vidywati(Farida Jalal) to his silent romance with his to be fiancee (Amrita Arora). His forming of the Hindustan Socialist party and later on the Naujawan Bharat Sangh to the assassination Of J.P.Saunders, The bombing of the central assembly over the trade dispute bill and the public safety bill, his 61 days hunger strike in the jail, his differences with Gandhi, gandhi signing the Irwin Pact to the final day when he his hanged. The movie is very hard hitting and never lets the viewer off for even a second. Brilliant performance by Ajay Devgan as The young revoultioanry and superbly supported by Sushant Singh, Santosh, Raj Babbar, Amrita Arora and Farida Jalal. What is sadly missing is his relationship with lala Lajpat Rai who was very instrumental in nurturing Bhagat Singh. But nevertheless this is simply a superb film (though the other bhagat singh movies were also good) and this is one film which will possibly give Ajay Devgan all the best actor awards and a very big image change. Rajkumar Santoshi’s most personal and intense film till date. Superb Music Score by A.R.Rehman, Brilliantly Shot by K.V.Anand. Kultar Singh, who co-wrote the script is the youngest brother of Bhagat Singh. Like All of rajkumar Santoshi’s film, this is a brilliant Character Study Film.

Psst -

1) Released on the same day as Guddu Dhanoa’s film ’’23rd March 1931 - Shaheed’’ . This is perhaps the first time in the history of World Cinema where 2 movies on the same topic have been released on the same date.

2) Sunny Deol originally wanted Rajkumar Santoshi to direct the film but Rajkumar Santoshi already had a film in the making on bhagat singh. Rajkumar Santoshi wanted Ajay dvgan in the role while Sunny Deol wanted Bobby Deol in the lead role so they fell apart.

3) Anjum Rajabali took nearly 18 months for the entire research. Research material includes Bhagat Singh’s prison notebooks, News papere Articles from The Tribune, His Essay ’’Why Am I an Atheist’’, Help from Kultar Singh (Bhagat Singh’s Younest Brother) and K.K.Khullar’s biography of Bhagat Singh.

4) Filming took only 5 months.

5) When Kultar Singh came on the sets he had blessed everyone except Ajay Devgan becuase he felt he couldn’t possibly bless someone who played his elder brother. Ajay Devgan was truly touched by this statement.

6) In real life Bhagat Singh and gandhi had never met face to face. Bhagat Singh had seen gandhi only once in person when he was small and gandhi had come to Lahore.

7) Lots of hue and cry was made over the potrayal of gandhi as the one responsible for Bhagat Singh’s death but Anjum Rajbali himself said that Gandhi was never responsible for his death.

8) The original Script of the film was nearly 330 minutes of Screen Time. The final script became 165 Minutes.

9) Shooting took place in Bombay and Pune.

Oops

1) The banner on the meeting of the congress where they want the britishers to give them total independence says 1929 while that meeting took place in 1930.

2) When bhagat singh goes to calcutta and goes in a lab to take help from the professor to learn to make bomb we hear the name of state of Maharashtra cropping up. This is not possible as the state of Maharashtra was never formed till 1st May 1960. Till Then it was known as the State Of Bombay.
