I love Richard Gere. And I mean truly, truly love him. I have seen Pretty Woman a million times and only for him. So whenever a Richard Gere movie comes to town I just have to see it. And my friends say that I am very biased when it comes to rating his movies. I always say they are amazing. Well this time around my dear darlings, I have a little surprise for you… UNFAITHFUL is a good movie no doubt. But it ain’t offering anything new.
Apart from the fact that it’s a visual delight there isn’t much to talk about. Of Course America appeals to most people and the way the cities and the suburbs are picturised, you almost wish you were there. So, here is a very happy family living in the subarban part of New York called Penn. It’s a beautiful countryside and most of us want to live in places like these when we have called it a day after probably 60 years of slogging our as=s off. But there is this couple who lives here just for the calm and the sheer joy of it. They commute everyday to New York city where you find all the buzz and the juice. They have ahappy marriage of 13 yeard and one look at them and their 8 yr old son gives a feeling of “hey, that’s too good to be true!!” But the fact is that they are really really happy, financially well to do, have a good social circle and all.
And yes, in spite of 13 years (of marriage) the sex is great (and it should be, its Richard Gere after all, can someone like him ever go wrong in bed ???) Okk, sorry, back to the movie.. So they are having this amazing life and all is perfect til Constance (Diane Lane) mets cute looking Frenchie in big bad NY City and its almost lust at first sight. Its this part of the movie where the two met and start seeing each other is sensationally done. I mean it actually gives you the tingles and you actually feel that its probably happening to you and if it isn’t then maybe it should!!! Some scenes of their lovemaking are beautifully shot. Its pure animal desire, mad hunger!! And somewhere they bring a smile on your face. (I am sorry to sound so explicit abt the sex bit, but that’s what the movie is all about) And suddenly you see this whole new woman in front of you. It’s the same wife and the same mother but suddenly the most amazing lover.
Her look is different, her feel is different and there is a plethora of emotions within her that are highlighted in her character. There is this sparkle in her eyes that was missing somewhere in her marriage. And suddenly Edward (Richard Gere) looks so much older, he almost looks like an uncle, like a loser (my poor Richard) and he sees the change in her. Her energy, her hesitation, her hidden smiles, all of it … and eventually finds out about her secret rendez-vous. What happens next?? Hey go see the movie, don’t want to spoil it for ya. As I said, its nothing different. Infidelity in marriages is not a new concept. Just that it’s a matured movie. Its got brilliant performances.
Its got Richard Gere (there I go again), Diane Lane and Oliver Martinez the French lover who are a visual delight. Their lovemaking is almost orgasmic to the people watching the movie. Its fast, its mad, its crazy and its Vow !! its an old wine in a new bottle and very good to taste. Try it !! This was probably the first movie after which I waslked out of the theatre and didn’t have much to say. Neither good nor bad. If you watching the movie for a meaning, then don’t. Watch it for kick sake, you’ll enjoy it better. And all you women out there … watch it for Richard Gere ….
