For those of you who dont know which movie this is about, heres the info.
Movie: Varsham (Telugu)
Cast: Prabhas, Trisha
Music: Devi Sri Prasad (DSP)
Lyrics: Sirivennala for all the songs.
If you dont remember DSP, try Kalusukovalani, Anandam, Sontham, Manmadhudu, Khadgam. His USP is Western-sounding music with native kinda melodies. He manages to add enough beats and guitars and stuff to make even routine tunes sound fresh. Here goes the review.
The songs are in order, from best to worst, obviously in my opinion.
Mellagaa ... : This is too good! Thrives on pure melody in places. Sirivennala dishes out absolutely romantic and sensuous lyrics about the rain and love in the middle of rain and DSPs melodies complement them beautifully. SPB Charan sounds so much like SPB and Sumangali (new singer?) sounds really youthful.
Nuvvosthaanante: The setting seems to the heroine welcoming the rain. Again, Sirivennala keeps the standards at his usual high. DSP does his usual fusion of melody and racy beats to make this another hit song.
Kopama .. : The heroines trying to soothe the hero or something. The tune is nothing to boast of but the lyrics elevate the song. If youve heard DSPs songs before, youll understand how he turns average tunes like Premante and Anandam (Anandam) into hit numbers. This is more of the same. The beats and the guitars make a simple tune sound good. Freshness counts, basically.
Nijam Pori: Sirivennalas lyrics sound awkward in a mass number. But the beat is racy and Adnan Sami sings it enthusiastically. (Pretty decent pronunciation too). This is sure to be a hit among those who love beat-oriented numbers.
Joole joole: 6. Langa Voni: Both these are lumped together they are beat-based mass songs that dont last beyond a few hearings. But they are definitely better than average and will become fairly popular numbers in the short-term.
Apart from these, there is a bit song that is a reworking of Nuvvosthaanante that sounds great too.
Definitely some of the best music to hit Telugu films in recent times, what with Chakri repeating himself to hell and back (Sathyams decent, though) and RPP disappearing and Mani Sharma dishing out standard fare. I wish I could find words to describe DSPs kind of music exactly - anyone has any ideas?
