ACTION JACKSON VS BHOPAL: A PRAYER FOR RAIN
After a disastrous November where all the Hindi releases failed, all hopes are pinned on December when three major films will hit screens, two of which will arrive this Friday. My views on these films:
ACTION JACKSON: It is directed by Prabhu Dheva and is the comeback of Baba Films, that made many hits in the 90s. It stars Ajay Devgn in the leading role along with 3 actresses – Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam and newcomer Manasvi Mamgai. It’s a typical Prabhu Dheva film and hence, a lot of action and some comedy are expected. And sure enough, that’s what the promos indicate as well. But the action is on another level altogether. Songs have worked to an extent, especially Keeda. All the 3 heroines look great, with the sizzling hot Manasvi being a big draw. Kunaal Roy Kapur also has a significant role in the film, supposedly.
However, Action Jackson faces challenges because of its costs. Also, it looks like just another action entertainer replete with action scenes and clapworthy dialogues. Such masala films arguably have reached a saturation point and hence, Action Jackson might face obstacles. Also, the buzz is limited. Opening can be the best after Happy New Year and if response is good, it can grow for sure.
BHOPAL: A PRAYER FOR RAIN: This is a Bollywood-Hollywood collaboration that has been making waves all around the world. It features Bollywood stars like Rajpal Yadav, Tannishtha Chatterjee and also Hollywood stars like Martin Sheen, Mischa Barton and Kal Penn. It deals with the true account of the disastrous Bhopal Gas Tragedy that occurred in 1984. Martin Sheen essays Warren Anderson, who was highly responsible for the catastrophe. The film had a screening at UN where it received thunderous response. Even the response at the marketing screening at the Cannes Film Festival was quite encouraging. The media and select bloggers who got a chance to see this film in October too couldn’t stop raving about the film.
Sadly, the buzz is very limited and it’s not an entertainer of sorts. However, in the past there have been instances of films like Paan Singh Tomar that released without fanfare and wasn’t a typical entertaining film. Yet, it worked big time as it was a very well made film. Here’s hoping Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain too leaves a mark at the box office!
