Mary Kom, five-time World Boxing Champion and Olympic medallist, will be soon releasing a new mobile startup in India that will teach women self-defence.
This will have an app that will provide safety tips as well as a free text message-based service. The whole idea is to aid women in feeling safer in a country that suffers from steep and regular unreported sexual violence.
Kom is also on the way to set up India’s first ever female ‘fight club’ and self-defence camp. This will be conducted jointly with mobile network Vodafone as their ‘Firsts’ campaign.
"Most of the women are really excited and really happy to learn something," said Kom about the self-defence camp in an interview with Wired.co.uk.
"The women are learning techniques like the one-two step, so I think that will be helpful in the future. And if they keep training that will really help them protect themselves."
The gruesome gang rape case of the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in Delhi in Dec 2012 brought violence against women in India in the limelight with the international press.
The Delhi gang rape victim died of her injuries and the four accused men have been sentenced to death. Protests across the country were held for a stronger legal approach to sexual violence.
Other reactions include, the manufacture of a light-weighing revolver marketed for women. The gun is avaialble for$2,000 and weighs about 500 grams. Sartaj Singh of India’s Ministry of Defence described it as "easy to handle and fits nicely in a lady’s purse".
The gun was named ‘in honour’ of the Delhi gang rape victim. Though activists have called the gun "an abhorrence to her memory".
Mary Kom's initiative may seem like a tiny drop in the ocean in comparison to the prevalent sexual violence that affects India.
"We are really affected as women. Day by day the crime increases," said Kom. "It is a great opportunity for me to help women especially, to give tips that might help in the future."
