Indeed, it was a delight to shop at Spar when I spotted it in Hyderabad almost an year ago. Spar advertise heavily in Bangalore boasting, “ If its not Spar fresh, its not fresh” it’s a USP for Spar to capture the market. It need to adhere to all quality checks to live up to that expectations. However the quality check fails to live up to customer satisfaction when it comes to customer service.

I have seen Spar Hyderabad, deteriorating in couple of months. Not because of its quality, but for the quality of service they deliver. It has slowly degraded its standard, ask me why.

Well the service at the store has gone down to levels. You won’t find a single soul to assist at Spar Hyderabad. The boys working there prefer gossip amongst themselves, instead of helping the customer. They are not seen in the supermarket after crossing three shelves. I could finally spot the guys gossiping at the liquor counter. It seems, employees are not trained sufficient.

They don’t seem to know, where lies what(simply causing inconvenience) To become a BIG BRAND you just can not afford to compromise on the customer service… can you?

I visited the Spar Hypermart on 15th june 2008, located on the Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, they were offering 50% discount on selected items in their store.

Myself and my cousin picked up some of the discounted items, after my billing as I waited for my cousin to complete his billing, glanced through the bill to find that the items which should have been billed at 50 % discount have been billed at only (approxly) 25% discount.

As my cousin completed his billing, we checked his billing and he too was billed with 25% discount for the items offered at 50% discount.

On contacting the Manager about the discrepency, he came back and apologised for the mistake "stating that the billing software was not updated". we got the refund of our money immediately.

But many unsuspecting customers purchasing the items - with the view of getting 50% discount might have been cheated, with only 25% discount.

My suggestion to all the people visiting any of the superstores to check the billing, especially on the discounted items, they might be paying more on the discounted items.

To the Supermarkets, Pl. update your billing softwares before announcing any discounts to the public.

This is about the store in New Thippasandra are in Bangalore. As this stored got opened in the month of May 2008 they were displaying a promotional offer and one such offer was Buy for Rs.999 * and get 6 Dinner Plates free and when I billed the items which amounted to Rs.2035 I was thinking I will be getting 2 free items. But to much of my shock I got only 1 free item and when I asked the Customer Service Executive they said whether it is 999 or more for 1 bill one can get only 1 free item (which is by the way was not at all mentioned anywhere and in that case I would splitted the bill).

Then the same executive told me that they can not and will not split the bills too even if the customer wishes for it. I found this behaviour and advertisement by the shop as a method to cheat people.

Reliance Retail Management:

Yesterday I had been to one of their outlets to redeem my bonus points.  First of all I was shocked that conversion value has been reduced from Rs 1/- per point to 70 np per point.   The counter sales staff checked the credit balance which was 312 points, and it was a logical step for her to make a voucher for redemption.  I was surprised she did not even bother to ask me or guide me regarding the same.

We were busy shopping and our billing for the various purchases came to around 392 bucks.  I thought I will redeem the bonus points and adjust Rs 200/- odd against my purchases.  The earlier system was to adjust the bonus points online.  But now they have added manual preparation of voucher, which seems ridiculous waste of time.  The counter girl was missing and later when I started pressurizing, that the credit balance one sales boy came and gave me the news that printer is out of order.  I advised them to make manual entry and rectify the balancing in the night.  To my shock I did not get the voucher and I had to pay up full cash.  It is real height of mismanagement.  I am wondering how many blunders they are committing to beaureacratic set up.  The procedures are worse than govt. office.

Another shocking development is that some staff member or company officials were at the counter ripping open the promotional pack of 3 Sunfeast and arranging it as single pack.  It is obvious that promotion pack will be cheaper and individual pack will be costly to the customer.  Such blatant manipulation, with recording of the same on cellphone camera is such a shocker.  If at they want to alter the packs, they could have taken the same into their warehouse and made the changes.  In order to set right the procedures it does not require highly paid executives but simple common sense.  I hope the Reliance management takes a note to perk up their systems to be consumer friendly.

I have had a really bad customer service approach lately with Indira Nagar Viveks. The way they handle the customer is pathetic. Earlier we wanted to buy basic amenities like TV, Fridge etc so Initially I checked with Viveks, their prices were on a higher side and second I didn’t like the way they handled us so we opted for VGP, which is close by Viveks (This was 6 Months before). Last week we decided to go-ahead for a Ken star Food processor in VPG but unfortunately they didn’t have stocks so we wanted to try out the same with Viveks. We asked a representative for a Demo she said it’s 7.30 pm and there is no proper person in the showroom so said she would send somebody to my residence for a Demo. Since I had to travel to Chennai for an official trip we said we would like to come after 2 days preferably in the afternoon session to see the Demo. As discussed me and my husband were in viveks showroom at 3.00 pm for seeing the Demo .We were approached by the same representative and to my surprise she said they would give a demo after buying the product, her body language and the tone was unimaginable she said first buy it and then only demo. I don’t expect the representative to give me a five star treatment but at least a ’decent’ approach. I believe that customer service is a direct reflection of the integrity of a company. Accepted the fact that you can’t give Demo for each and every product but at least a proper communication would have saved my energy and time Wouldn’t recommend them to anybody. I’m sure they’re good if you get what you want but haven’t a clue about customer service.

**I know this topic is under Bangalore, but there are no American Super Markets listed, so either read on or ignore me for being in the wrong category!!**

***************************************************

I’ve been shopping in 3 Super Markets for many years. Albertsons, for the good prices on their canned goods and their great buy 1 get 1 free sales, Winn Dixie, for the great selection of meats and seafood and again, their buy 1 get 1 free sales, and Publix, for their wonderful, fresh veggies and fruits...and their buy 1 get 1 free sales.

And I do use coupons (not always, but most of the time.)

We all like and need to save money, don’t we?

Our Target store just reopened as a Target superstore with a Super Market now too. So I decided to try them out.(As did about a million other people the first week) I thought, Wow, they’ll probably have great grand opening sales!

Target, big, bright, laid out well. They had many hard to find items as well as a fresh sushi bar and an expanded bakery and deli. Hmmmmmmm, they also had very high prices! Most people I noticed weren’t even bothering to notice that. All they noticed was, NEW STORE! One thing was on sale. Whole watermelons, grand opening sale, with coupon, 79¢. But, just about everything I checked out was more money than the other stores. The convenience of being able to shop for groceries and clothing and household supplies all in one store outweighed the overpricing to alot of people I guess.

So back I am at, my 3 favorite Super Markets.

In these stores I’ve already learned that not all items that are on special displays are necessarily on sale. I also know thatbig name brands actually purchase shelf space that is at eye level to make you and I more apt to buy it. Isn’t it easier to look straight ahead, than to look up or down for a product?

Well people, start looking up and down. Check out the canned peaches on the top shelf and on the bottom shelf as opposed to the eye level shelf. Top shelf, brand X, 16 oz. for 89¢, bottom shelf, 16oz. for 97¢, eye level shelf, 16oz. for $1.29.

You can’t be lazy when you shop if you want to save any money.

As I stated before, I do use coupons, but not as often as I should. Check out your Sunday newspaper for some great ones! You’ll be surprised on how much you really can save. But remember too, don’t buy a 50 lb. bag of rice because it has a 75¢ off coupon, unless you plan on using it within a reasonable amount of time! Don’t buy 10 cans of cat food with a $1.00 off coupon if you don’t have a cat!(Believe me, some people really do!)

Another thing, don’t think that buying a larger size will always save you money. Check the unit price amount, which is the per oz. price and compare it to all sizes of the same product. You will be surprised when you figure out that sometimes it’s better to buy in a smaller size.

Another thing I notice is that people don’t always look for expiration dates. It takes a second to do it. Why chance buying something that expires tomorrow, when right next to it is one that still has a week left until the expiration date?

Eat before you shop and you are less apt to make what I call hunger purchases. These are items that look soooooo good, because you’re hungry. Yet when you get them home, you realize you really didn’t need or want them!

Read the flyers/circulars the stores mail out each week. Shop in more than one Super Market. (Unless they’re 25 miles apart!)

Take advantage of sales and use your coupons. Try to shop without your children or husband/wife. Shop alone, stick to a list, check prices and expiration dates. You’ll save money and be happier in the long run. **********
