TOP-20
I don’t think this is the best topic to write a detailed review on since it is about 2 years old. So I will just list the top 20 performances here quickly.
20) HRITHIK ROSHAN (KMG)---A decent performance in a quite tough role from Roshan Jr. Though why he sweeps all the awards is a mystery.
19) SUNIL SHETTY (KHEL)---A brilliant negative role via which Shetty finally came back into his spark for at least a little while.
18) JIMMY SHERGILL (HAASIL)---A wonderful, sincere performance by the playful Jimmy Shergill. Hats off for demonstrating such versatility and talent.
17) GOVINDA & SANJAY DUTT (EK AUR EK GYARAH)---An unnoticed comedic performance from both these wonders. There team is fantastic and they entertain hilariously in this movie.
16) FARDEEN KHAN (KHUSHI)---Fantastic performance from the highly underrated Khan. In KHUSHI he was good in all sorts of sequences: comedy, romantic, and action/serious.
15) PARESH RAWAL (HUNGAMA)---Hilarious execution of a hilarious character by a wonderful actor.
14) PRIYANKA CHOPRA (ANDAAZ)---Silencing performance by ex-Miss India whose critics believed beauty queens cannot act. A performance that demonstrates how easily a newcomer can hide the amount of time spent in the industry by great energy and talent.
13) ABHISHEK BACHCHAN (ZAMEEN)---An otherwise demented movie where Abhishek was the show saving grace with his decent execution of a decent character.
12) SHAHRUKH KHAN (CHALTE CHALTE)---Hard to say this but SRK was better here than in Kal Ho Naa Ho because here at least he wasn’t given all the sympathy to get even more over with the fans. In CHALTE CHALTE, he was rather given a more challenging task to re-play what Vivek played wonderfully in Saathiya. So kudos to SRK to still make his presence felt with his entertaining performance in an otherwise half-baked role.
11) JOHN ABRAHAM (SAAYA)---A wonderful performance worth remembering. After this movie John failed to impress again but still Saaya will surely be remembered for his good act.
10) BIPASHA BASU (JISM)---A wonderful performance in the role of a vamp, which was kind of overshadowed by her own image of an exposing hot chick.
9) HEMA MALINI (BAGHBAAN)---A great return from this veteran actress who quickly made even the best actress nomination list at such an age.
8) AJAY DEVGAN (BHOOT)---A wonderful performance here where Ajay keeps his ground despite a wonderful, histrionic performance from Urmila.
7) ARSHAD WARSI (MUNNABHAI MBBS)---A highly underrated actor who made a fantastic comeback with this movie, becoming an instant choice of many prestigious film makers for their light-hearted movies.
6) ABHISHEK BACHCHAN (MAIN PREM KI DEEWANI HOON)---Another great performance from Abhishek, overshadowing all opposition from then big stars Hrithik and Kareena. Now Abhishek shares the high-profile status with them after MPKDH, where he surprised one and all by stealing the show.
5) AMITABH BACHCHAN (BAGHBAN)---A performance that stands tall. AB senior knocked everyone out in this movie, since no one could do anything to stop this determined veteran. He is too good in all the sequences although what prevents him from being on the top spot is the fact that he has done similar roles in the past and continues to do them.
4) SAIF ALI KHAN (KAL HO NAA HO)---A performance that got the Nawab Junior the recognition he deserves. He swept a Samsung style icon award as well as all Best Supporting Actor awards. Truly knockout, to me, the hero of this flick had Aman’s role been portrayed by anyone except SRK, who obviously got a lot of footage.
3) SANJAY DUTT (MUNNA BHAI MBBS)---How Sanjay Dutt failed to win a best actor award for this marvellous performance is a mystery. Sure Dutt is type cast as a don, but Munna Bhai is a don hard to portray for any actor, Dutt being no exception. Still, he delivers an outstanding performance here that has him win only a few best actor nominations and actor in comedy role award, so sad only this much for such a great performance.
2) IRFAN KHAN (HAASIL)---Irfan enters the top three with a wonderful, hard-hitting performance as the antogonist of this otherwise unnoticed movie. His performance made the movie a great watch for any audience, despite so much violence in the movie. Still, a performance to remember from the magical Khan.
1) SALMAN KHAN (TERE NAAM)---This place is shared. But Sallu deserves equal amount of praise as the other star here. Sallu might be the king of controversy and negativity to the media. But how he silenced all his detractors with a ground-breaking performance in Tere Naam is still quite evident. Even then he was surrounded in a controversy with Vivek. However he simply overtook Vivek easily with his best actor nomination for the movie, for which he actually deserved the award the most. Even a year later he beat the Vivek-Aish combo as Mujhse Shaadi Karogi beat the opposition of Kyun Ho Gaya Na easily to emerge the winner. Sallu Sahib, cheers!
1) URMILA MATONDKAR (BHOOT)---A fantastic performance that even in this male dominated list, stands out by a female artist. Urmila was the critics’ winner here for the best actress awards while even the public award was supposed to be hers as no other female was competent enough to give her a tough time for this place. Bhoot was a class act on her part, period!

20 Great Performers!
1) Salman Khan - Tere Naam. Talk about a comback, Salman comback has to ranked as probably the biggest and best comeback ever in Bollywood history. And with this wonderful comeback, he came up with his career-best performance in Tere Naam. Nobody, couldn’t have enacted this role like how Salman did. I simply think he was robbed from the Critics actor award.
2) Hrithik Roshan – Koi Mil Gaya. Talk about doing something different, Hrithik excels as the mental kid. Hrithik deserved all the awards that had came to him (except the Critics Actor award for Koi Mil Gaya from Filmfare. Look cheat)
3) Manoj Bajpai – Pinjar. Here was one performance that went unnoticed and finally got recgonized at the National Awards. Manoj was simply amazing as Rashid in Pinjar. Its a shame a film like this had to flop. Indian people can’t watch true quality cinema.
4) Amitabh Bachchan – Baghban. He’s down, but for sure, he’s not out. Amitabh seems to get better as age increases. In Baghban, he manage to bring tears in your eyes in the second half.
5) Irfan Khan – Haasil. Talk about a ruthless character, Irfan was excellent in Haasil that got him all the awards he deserve. Bravo and finally!
6) Urmila – Bhoot. If 2003 belonged to anyone, it was Urmila. Wow she was amazing in Bhoot. She deserve all the Best Actress award this film.
7) Urmila – Pinjar. No wonder why she is amazing. And Pinjar was no exception. However, if Bhoot gets her Best Actress, then Pinjar should enable her for Critics Actress.
8) Sushmita Sen – Samay. Finally a film that shows Sushmita Sen true acting capability.
9) Saif Ali Khan – Kal Ho Na Ho. I knew one day he’ll succeed, and he for sure does in Kal Ho Na Ho. He was the show-stealer in Kal Ho Na Ho.
10) Sanjay Dutt – Munnabhai MBBS. Give Sanjay any role and he succeeds with flying colour. And Munnabhai MBBS is no exception.
11) Ajay Devgan – Gangaajal. As always, Ajay excels in every role you give him. However, he shined as the cop.
12) Paresh Rawal - Hungama. Lots of confusion and comedy in this film, however, all said and done, Paresh was the one who grabbed all the acclaim.
13) Nasseruddin Shah-Teen Deewarein. A next performance that went unnoticed. People of India needs to judge properly before they go and vote.
14) Juhi Chawla – Teen Deewarein. I was happy she got some awards for this excellent film. She deserved it.
15) Ajay Devgan – LOC - Kargil. Probably the best war film ever made in Bollywood, and it went to achieve flop status. Totally disgraceful. However, Ajay Devgan truly stand out in this film. The soldier he enacted should be proud of him.
16) Abhishek Bachchan – LOC-Kargil. Abhishek Bachchan was simply fantastic in LOC-Kargil. And his death scene hurt me alot. Also like Ajay Devgan, the soldier he enacted should be proud of him.
17) Hema Malini - Baghban. Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan suit as a couple. Hema was great in her role and backed Amitabh every step in the film.
18) Rekha – Koi Mil Gaya. As the mother of a mental child, it truly wasn’t a easy role for Rekha. However, the sensation star scored high in this film. Rekha was simply robbed in this film. No doubt about it.
19) Boman Irani – Munnabhai MBBS. Boman Irani as Doctor Asthana was funny, oh man, he had me cracking as the man who believed in laughing therapy even through bad situations.
20) Arshad Warsi – Munnabhai MBBS. Oh man, like the theme I used. You can be down, but you are definitely not out. Arshad Warsi proved this theme with Munnabhai. And boy, he bagged some big awards as his role as Circuit.

Some Memories Never Fade
I am writing this article on some of the top dogs of Bollywood from 2002 to 2004. I have not put them in any order as it would be unfair to judge the amount of effort and brilliance they have put in. I may have forgotten some, maybe because I think they were not worthy of achieving this list or maybe because I have not seen the movie. This list is of actors/actresses and directors. I am not really ready yet to comment on other categories e.g. music.
Saif Ali Khan: In my opinion his was the best performance in Kal Ho Naa Ho. The amount of talent he can display as a ’’side-hero’’ was shown in Dil Chahta Hai. Once again in KHNH he showed his abilities. His comic timing, expressions, body language, chemistry with other actors and his dramatic scene prove that he is one of the best today. His performance was well worth a nomination and possibly the award for best supporting actor.
Preity Zinta: The second member of the Kal Ho Naa Ho crew. Well not just her performance in Kal Ho Naa Ho, but also in Koi Mil Gaya, where she portrayed the change of a mature women to a childish person alongside Hrithik Roshan, her seriousness and resolve in Lakshya, her writing column in the BBC network, she has proved to be an actress of substance.
Om Puri: His performance in Dhoop alone was enough to bring him in the list. One of the best versatile actors ever, he has represented Bollywood internationally and won lots of critical acclaim. Other than Dhoop, as the character with grey shades in Dev, the larger than life King of Bollywood (A MUST SEE!), and Maqbool. A brilliant veteran actor who has no limits.
Irfan Khan: What can I say! His performance in Maqbool was spell binding. After seeing his performance I cannot imagine one other actor in that role. In Haasil again he has managed to shows his skill. An actor who gets better and better and was already brilliant to start with. Any film of his is worth watching just for his performance. An actor who never sinks below expectations.
Sanjay Dutt: He gave one of his career best performances in Munna Bhai MBBS. He won the heart of millions. He stole the show in Plan, which was a weak film but the moment Sanjay Dutt arrived on screen, it was Sanjay Dutt only. Need I say more?
Pankaj Kapoor: How did he get on the list? Before I said Irfan Khan’s performance in Maqbool was spell binding. Pankaj Kapoor, however had the best performance in the movie. An actor ingnored by Bollywood, he showed everyone that even after working with sincere dedication in Dramas, Serials, he can easily return with an award winning performance.
Hrithik Roshan: His larger than life, innocent and spledid performance in Koi Mil Gaya proves that he was not a 1 hit wonder. He won all the awards for his performance except the national award. Then again in Lakshya he gave a tremendous deliverance.
Manoj Bajpai: Bhiku Matre was immortalised. Then many others. This time it was Rashid in Pinjar. He defeated thew favourite Hrithik Roshan to the National award, his second now. His performance in LOC was also noteworthy. A character actor like Irfan Khan, he too is highly dependable.
Sharukh Khan: Most of you are thinking what the hell is he doing here. I too have critisized him before. The main reason for my critisicm towards SRK is the fact that he repeats himself. Even then, there is no denying that he can act, and can do it pretty well. Chalte Chalte, Main Hoon Na and Kal Ho Naa Ho were very good performances, even though they were not award worthy. Veer Zaara will possibly prove to be a turning point in his career. He plays a more depth character this time, and the same in Swades. Both movies will depict that he can act in various roles.
Amitabh Bachan: His power house performance in Khakee needs no revisitation. The same with Baghban, Dev, and almost every other movie he has done. He is one of the commercially succesful, who has the ability to be a character actor.
Rani Mukherji: A simply tremendous actress. Chalte Chalte, Yuva, Hum Tum and forth. She delivers, and she is outstanding. Her voice is the ruelr of all hearts. Not only beautiful, talented but she also has a special outlook for doing various roles.
Urmilla Matondkar: Not really one of my favourite actresses, but she delivered hit after hit after hit. Bhoot - a performance above Preity Zinta’s in Kal Ho Na Ho. Ek Hasina Thi, again an absolutely intense and brilliantly executed performance, the same with Pinjar. She managed to mix succes with versatality.
Tabu: She too like Urmilla has been fabulous. Her performances in Hawa, Chandni Bar and Maqbool were mind blowing. She can experiment well and beats her previous achievement each time.
Rajkumar Santoshi: The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Khakee. He managed to portray historical/social themes of cinema into commercialism. Very few have the ability to do that. A simple genius who only creates masterpieces when it comes to direction. His movies have fetched actors their national awards - Ghayal, Damini, Ghatak, Pukar, The Legend of Bhagat Singh. This year maybe Khakee to for Amitabh Bachan’s performance.
J.P. Dutta: LOC proves to be history in the making. An excellent war movie by a brave director. Many people have slammed LOC as too long. But are we that ignorant that we cannot give extra time to pay tribute to those who lost lives. JP Dutta has achieved what he wanted to do - to immortalise the soldiers who died. And he was succesful in doing so. Bollywood should be grateful that a director had the guts to make such a difficult movie.
Ajay Devgan: It all started with Company. The Legend, Deewangee, LOC, Bhoot, Zameen, Gangajal, Qayamat, Yuva, Khakee. He suddnely found inside him ability which was waiting to come out since years. He became a director’s dream actor. His forthcoming movies are more than awaited - an actor of his calibre only knows one direction and let me tell you for this guy, the sky is not the limit.
SPECIAL TRIBUTE - YASH JOHAR
So many come on this earth,
To prove our own worth,
Only a few leave an impression,
While others try to gain attention.
We are changed by circumstances,
Because to wisdom we give no glances,
But those who can change times,
Are well above the price of dimes.

A great 2003
2003 was a fairly good year for bollywood. It had some fantastic movies though many of them were not recognized. I know that my review is pretty late but still, I could not resist writing. This year was a year of something fresh, something different from the normal masala movies. Here is a list of some of the best performers of 2003, but it is my opinion. I do not expect everyone to agree with all my choices but ?????
20. The Kal Ho Na Ho Trio- This movie had to be mentioned in every category. Saif?s high point, Srk good but the same and Priety Zinta just OK.The best had to be ????. Sweeto!!!!!!!
19. Manisha Koirala [ Escape From Taliban ] ? It was one of the most unnoticed performances last year. Its because though the script of the film was to some extent strong, the direction was horrible. But , Manisha did a splendid job!
18. Amitabh Bachan [Baghban] ? Do I need to give explanations for this one??????? Awesome movie, excellent performances and a brilliant and touching script.
17. Rekha [ Koi Mil Gaya & Bhoot]- Many of my friends might not agree with this but what I really wanted to appreciate was that, at this age, Rekha was sooooooo damn graceful, beautiful, and she carried herself so well and still acted so well!!
I loved her in both the movies.
16. Ajay Devgan [ Gangaajal] ? A strong performance by him of may be, just his eyes. But ,he is repeating the same kind of roles!!!! Hope he changes this in Masti?
15. Manoj Bajpai [Pinjar] ? He is again a wonderful , powerful & underrated actor. Though this movie was full of brilliant performances, I think he was the best.
14. Abhishekh Bacchan [Zameen and Kuch Naa Kaho]- Two different kinds of cinema and he did it with maturity. One of a tough A.C.P and one, a lover. I think ,he was the saving grace of KNK, because of its horrible story and horrible direction and of course, horrible Ashhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
13. Rahul Bose & Sanjay Suri[Jhankaar Beats]- This one is now one of my favorite movies. Sanjay Suri again gives a simple n mature performance with full justice to his role. Rahul Bose once again proves that he is a blessing to the Indian film Indusrtry
12. Nana Patekar [Bhoot] ? This man just does everything with his eyes and his body language. Anything more ????
11.Naseeruddin Shah and Nagesh Kukunoor [Teen Deewarein] -This movie really came up with something new and some real good acting. It had characters with meaning and emotions which were portrayed by these wonderful actors with great intensity.
10. Antara Mali and Rajpal Yadav [MMDBCH] ? This movie was a real break for both these wonderful stars. Antara proved her versatility after Road and Rajapl Yadav , that he is not just a side actor, but a real actor!!! Great going guys.
9. Boman Irani [Darna Mana Hai and Munnabhai MBBS]- This is called -------- BACK WITH A BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing laughs this man had.
8.Tanuja [Bhoot and Rules]- A great mother and a great Dadi!!
7.Om Puri and Revathi [Dhoop]- It was a beautiful and a real movie. Om Puri , as usual was great and Revathi proves herself again.
6.Rani Mukherji[Chalte Chalte]- The saving grace of this horrible, so called superhit movie. She looked beautiful and proved herself yet again as a wonderful actress.
5.Juhi Chawla [Teen Deewarein] ?At last Juhi proved that she could do much more than her usual bubbly , chirpy roles. She looked beautiful and decent all through though she was dressed in simple cotton sarees.
4. Sushmita Sen [Samay] ? She acted well enough to be accepted as a tough lady cop! Yes, she can look much more than just cute and glamorous! A wonderful power packed and of course underrated performance by Sush. Keep it up!
3.Raveena Tondon [ Satta]- Oh!!!!! I don?t know how she missed awards for this film. One of the most well portrayed performances by her. [I don?t think Priety deserved the filmfare award] All right Raveena, we are used to it. The awards see only the public collections, not the acting. Sure you know that!!!!!
2.Urmila Matondkar [Bhoot]- 2003 very well belonged to her[ Bhoot, Pinjar and Tehzeeb] But bhoot, was something. Her acting in some scenes was such that I don?t think any other actress in this industry could have done it better. Picture perfect!!!
1. Hritik Roshan [ Koi Mil Gaya] ? Anyone against this?????It had to be him. It was a savior for the sinking boat of his career. OK Hritik, you are not the next Kumar Gaurav!!!!!!!
This was all my opinion!!!!!!! Your comments are welcome!
P.S ? Oh! Come on!!!!!!!! Somebody put me in ur trust list!!!!!!!!!

The Kings and The Queens of 2003
Before I start mentioning my picks for the year 2003 I ll like to make it clear that this is from the movies I’ve seen last year. Gangajaal, Dhoop, Zameen were the prominent ones that I missed. Most of the other I’ve watched.
So here comes my list:-
20. Juhi Chawla in Teen Deewarein
Juhi’s role as everybody else in the movie had a lot of shades. Director’s selection of Juhi for the role was fully vindicated by Juhi’s understated performance. And nowhere in the movie she was overshadowed by Naseer, the far more seasoned actor.
19. John Abraham in Saaya
I know this movie was a big washout but the same cannot be said about John’s acting though. Clearly he is one of the few models who can act. The role required him to show pain, anguish and he did that to perfection.
18. Raghuvir Yaadav in Darna Mana Hai
This along with Boman’s character in Darna Mana Hai were beautifully etched and were done full justice by both of these actors. Raghuvir’s body language, his facial expressions, his dialogues all delivered that message of his guilt in the movie. Superb performance.
17. Boman Irani in Darna Mana Hai
There was a kind of aura around Boman Irani in this movie. Whatever time he is around in this movie you cannot but stop noticing. Saif looks like a novice infront of him. You cannot expect what he is up to!!
16. Akshaye Khanna in Hungama
Another wonderful act by Akshaye. He is really doing justice to his potential in his second innings. This time he tries his hand at comedy. And boy isnt he succesful!!! I just luv the way he befools his father :D and also his interactions with Paresh. Though I thought Paresh Rawal was a bit letdown in this movie.
15. Jimmi Shergil in Haasil
Although I thought initially that Jimmy likes to ape Shahrukh (Remember his act in Mohabattein) but Haasil proved me wrong. May be its because of the director. Whatever he did what was expected of the movie . And thats why he is part of this august company.
14. Saif Ali Khan in Kal ho na ho
Saif is really good at comedy. No 2 opinions here. He is once again in his elements in KHNH. Though I didn’t like that movie that much but Saif’s acting was outstanding. His way of taking jokes on himself, his comic timing are all breathtaking. Here is an actor who is at his peak.
13. Urmila in Bhoot
Urmila really scared the hell out of us.Beautifully presented by Ramu this movie was really the talk of the year and had many lookalikes. But one that was the clear winner was Bhoot and Urmila deserved a lot of credit for that. Her terrifying expressions had loads of ppl. scream and screach with horror.
12. Juhi Chawla in Jhankaar Beats
A Fresh movie with a fresh star cast. And none more than Juhi Chawla whose only other movie last year was Teen Deewarein. Juhie outdid most of her colleagues in this movie by sheer freshness and easy to go charm.
11. Rahul Bose in Jhankaar Beats
Rahul Bose was another class acts in Jhankar Beats. Off course he had the best lines. But he had to carry them off and that he did with elan. He was the best thing to happen to Indian Cinema last year.
10. Manoj Bajpai in Pinjar
He has always been my favorite actor since Satya. He once again delivers a power packed performance in Pinjar. Though this time he didnt ve that much to deliver but still his silence really speaks a lot. I initially thought that he may not suit in a role of a Muslim but was I wrong man!! He was truly wonderful. Keep them coming Manoj!!!
9. Amitabh Bachchan in Baghban
Baghban had nothing much to write about. The same stereotypical characters, beaten to death script. But it had one thing going for it. It had the Big B. And he put all the shortcomings of this movie on the back burner and carried this one on his old but powerful shoulders. Just watch this flick for Amitabh and you wont go unsatisfied. Just look how he churns out those nonsense dialogues with amazing grace.
8. Hrithik Roshan in Koi Mil Gaya
Yours truly were one of the lot who wrote off Mr. Hrithik Roshan after his half a dozen of flops. I am not ashamed of it I think he deserved that. But he did bounce back (Same as Sachin in the Sidney test) with this sci-fi flick. He did got a tailor made role where he had tons to perform and he didnt let this opportunity slip. Enacting a role of an under developed man he brought tears into our eyes.
7. Sanjay Dutt in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S
Now wasnt Sanjay tailormade for this role?? After his umpteen attempts at portraying THE BHAI here was his another salvo. And he does a grand job at that. True he got a wonderful script, a sincere director and amazing costars to carry it thru but he did it with elan.
6. Rahul Bose in Mr&Mrs. Iyer
Rahul Bose has something unique in him. I never felt that he tried too hard but still his performances were always noteworthy. Another example of that is this wonderfully crafted movie by Aparna Sen. He fitted into his role of a Muslim Free Lance Photographer to a T. A very COOL performance that complimented the powerpacked Konkana wonderfully.
5. Boman Irani in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S
For me he was the star of this year. He was brilliant in Darna Mana Hai cameo. And then there was Lets Talk in which he was simply awesome. But it was his comic touch in MBMBBS that left me exasperated. Mamu was simply brilliant. If Sholay had Amzad Khan, Andaz Apna Apna had Shakti Kapoor then this movie had Boman. Really awesome.
4. Rajpal Yadav in MMDBCH
A really underrated performer till now he was top notch in Main Bhi Madhuri Dixit. As a simpleton from Gajraula he was simply great. Just watch the scene where he is selected as the actor in a movie but he is arguing the case of Chutki instead. Truly memorable performance. Its time that he gets his due.
3. Irfan Khan in Haasil
I first saw him in tv serials but really noticed him in one of the Star BestSellars where he played a dream merchant. He was awesome then. And so was he in Haasil. In a Beaten to Death role of a politician he was convincing. Watch him in Maqbool, another A Grade performance.
2. Naseeruddin Shah in 3 Deewarein
I am a huge fan of Naseer ever since I saw him in Mirza Ghalib reciting those Jagjit Singh melodies. He got a multi layered role and he performed it with elan. Boy does he have a comic timing ?? I believe he is the most brilliant comic actor around. Remember Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. Keep them coming Naseer.
1. Konkana Sen Sharma in Mr.& Mrs. Iyer
And here comes the queen of 2003. Mrs. Iyer was truly the performer of the year. I became a fan of hers just in her first outing (As far as I know). In a role of a life time where she is plays a contemporary Tamilian (Traditional at the same time modern) who doesn’t believe in the politics of creed she is marvellous. No two words about it.
Waiting for your comments.....

And the NOMINATIONS ARE…!!!
2003, was definitely a memorable year. Many new faces were given chances to prove themselves, while the senior actors were getting chances to prove that they are the senior artistes of Bollywood. All were given good roles, but how much justice the actors did to their roles,is the thing to be noticed.Bollywood produced lots of films, and each performance was commented, but here they are nominated. From my nominations, pick up the names whom you would give an award.
*******************************************************************
THE MOST TOUCHING PERFORMANCE:
1.Amitabh Bachchan-Baghban:A father of those 4 sons, who didn`t treat him well, and the outburst of the father in the climax. In such a role, one could have never imagined any other actor than Mr.Amitabh Bachchan. The way this actor spoke, the way he noticed and obsereved the beahviour of his sons,is clapworthy.A good actor is the one who makes his audience cry in an emotional scene and Mr.Bachchan did it.The story had some flaws, the film had some flaws, but this actor made you forget about all the flaws.Through his breakthrough performance,Mr.Bachchan gave Bollywood another hit.
2.Urmila Matondkar-Pinjar:The way Urmila Matondkar showed the feeling of a girl, during partition,is praiseworthy. How she feels when she knows that she was kidnapped only because of her grandfather`s crime,Urmila shows it all, living the role of the girl Puro. When she meets her loving brother in the climax or where she meets the man whom she was going to get married with, show that Ms.Matondkar,is equally well in tragic roles,as much as in a modern housewive`s role.Urmila Matondkar, did a brilliant job!
3.Hrithik Roshan-Koi Mil Gaya:The role of a grown-up boy,who is mentally challenged and suddenly changes when an alien of another planet arrives is played by Hrithik Roshan. The scene where he is beaten up by an aggressive boy and his cycle is destroyed,he really makes you feel sorry for the character of Rohit.Even in other scenes, where he wants to learn basketball and ends up being beaten up,or where his teacher throws him out of the class, the Roshan kid excels.A lovely performance!
4.Shabana Azmi-Tehzeeb:This is one such character played by the one and only Shabana Azmi, which has grey shades, but in the end turns out to be a positive character.A successful singer, disliked by her daughter, the role of Rukhsana is excellently played by Shabana Azmi. Her reaction to her daughter`s statement that she killed her husband or her attitude, when her daughter asks her to stay at her place for sometime, proves that the much acclaimed actress of the past, can do wonders, even today.
5.Ajay Devgan-Gangaajal:Ajay Devgan,an actor who is now into some serious and sensible films, proved himself once again through ?Gangaajal?,playing the role of an honest cop.His outburst in several scenes, were clapworthy.
*******************************************************************
THE BEST COMEBACK:
1.Salman Khan-Tere Naam:After films like ?Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge,Yeh hai Jalwam, etc.?,Salman Khan was almost finished until ?Tere Naam? happened.Where in the first half,he was the regular Salman Khan,in the second half he proved his versatility. His scenes in the mental hospital proved that even he can act well,if he wants to.
2.Juhi Chawla-3 Deewaarein & Jhankaar Beats:Juhi Chawla, the actress with a beautiful smile did off-beat films,in 2003.Both her films,?Jhankaar Beats & 3 Deewaarein?,were very different films, from the lovey-dovey fairy tales of Bollywood. We had been watching Juhi Chawla, smiling and dancing in typical Hindi movies, where we loved her and in 2003,we also loved her in such different films.Where she did a very natural job in the role of a sweet housewife in Jhankaar Beats,on the other hand, she played the mysterious character of a documentary filmmaker in 3 Dewaarein, equally well.An actress who has matured!
3.Saif Ali Khan-Kal Ho Naa Ho:After ?Dil Chahta Hai?,no impressive film cam Saif`s way, until ?Kal Ho Naa Ho?,where he played your boy next door, wonderfully. In the scene where his beloved tells him that she is in love with someone (else),the way Saif acts makes it very easy for the viewers to relate with his character.Throughout the film,he kept his audience entertained.
4.Urmila Matondkar-Bhoot:Urmila Matondkar, who failed to impress in 2002,acting in films like ?Deewaangee?,where she had no scope to perform,or in a dance sequence in ?Company?,took her viewers by surprise in 2003.?Bhoot?,marked her comeback after ?Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya?.In Bhoot,as a wife who is being haunted by a ghost,Urmila shocked her viewers, made the film critics shut their mouths, and forced them to put their hands together to clap.It was her performance, which was the highlight of this film.
5.Sushmita Sen-Samay:The actress who was being called an item number dancer(?Mehboob Mere? from Fiza),proved everybody wrong by showing her acting talents in a very serious role of a strong cop,in ?Samay_When Time Strikes?.Her face expressios, her dialogue delivery, were all first class in this film. This is an actress to look out for,in the coming days,as she again impressed us in ?Paisa Vasool?.
6.Raveena Tandon-Satta:This actress made her presence felt till the end of this movie. She mostly used to star in male dominated, action flicks where she never used to get any scope to perform.By acting in ?Satta?,she impressed all her viewers. How she showed the transformation of a simple girl,Anuradha to a strong politician,is fantastic.
*******************************************************************
THOSE WHOM YOU WOULD LOVE TO HATE:
Warning:No ?Thakkurs? here,so please don`t be afraid.
1.Irrfan Khan-Haasil:The depth in his eyes and his mysterious look, makes Irrfan Khan,an interesting villain. The actor made full use of his looks, which resulted in a terrific performance. This negative character was made even more interesting by Irrfan Khan.he has replaced all the Prem Chopras,Amrish Puris etc.
2.Sayaji Shinde-Calcutta Mail:Sayaji Shinde made you HATE the character of Lakhan Yadav. In the scene where he is trying to speak in English in a disco bar to the daughter of a politician (to impress her),he is superb. He makes a hateful character an irritating one through his wonderful villainous performance.

Here they are.....>>>>
Now now now, the year has come to an end and it is time to know the twenty best performances. I must say it was a year of Experimental films, no formula movies, and above all a year where everyone tried to perform better than their STAR Status. Yes, don’t you guys think that the Star status which an actor gets from one movie binds him or her in an image which they unable to break throughout their career. Well, this year so some great **NO- TYPICAL hero movies**.
Some come backs and yes good humour, so to say! Like we had ***Hrithik*** in Koi Mil Gaya, ***Arshad*** in Waisa Bhi Hota Hai- II and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, ***Manoj Bajpai*** in Pinjar, ***Urmila*** in both Pinjar and Bhoot. Well well now here is the list. BEFORE YOU READ. Apun ka rule sunley babu ya bibi: **Pehla Rule:** Don’t fight with me why have I chosen him or her. **Doosra:** It is your wish if you want to follow the first rule. **Teesra:** New Year Happy ho sabka, boley to bilkul JHAKKAS!!
***1. Urmila (Bhoot)***- *“bhoot hoon main”* this reminded me of the song in a B- grade film **“Kabristaan”** and so I was just thinking why such a song. As it was blessed with the direction of Ram Gopal Verma I thought ‘may be the movie is better than the song’. Movie released and being an ardent Urmila fan we decided to make it to the Priya cinema to watch BHOOT. Wow! I was shaken and scared. It did manage to scare me. As she got scared the audience did and as she cried the audience didn’t know how to react, as she was so simple and real. She brought veggies from the market like a housewife, yet she did not have to clad her self in a saree. She would call up her husband and speak to him like a normal housewife still she did not need to use the ‘suniye ji’ tone. She was so real that it was hard to believe. Urmila did not do anything special for the character as she said she just tried to be Swati a normal girl with dreams and love for her husband. ***Kudos to her!*** Though she was working with actors like Victor Banerjee and Rekha yet keeping herself as the best. If she was the central character of the movie then she made sure that she was the main lead by her acting prowess.
***2. Irfaan Khan (Haasil)***- Have you ever seen a more dreadful, dangerous, and helpful villain than him. Well I simply loved the character and the way it was treated by the director- Tigmanshu Dhulia and actor- Irfaan Khan. Irfan Khan ko haasil hua role aur lot of flak. It seemed to be tailor made for this actor who hails from theatre. His every expression and reaction was so well timed and worked out that the audience was left spell bound. He really deserves to do better roles and characters, which can help him, grow as an actor and not a star.
***3.Victor Banerjee (Bhoot)***- A father who knows that his daughter is not going to survive for too long, and he knows that the patient he is treating has something paranormal going on but cannot help and do the medical treatment. The perturbed father gets message from his daughter’s soul through the possessed *Swati*. Just check out the way he looks at Urmila’s character, when he sees her for the first time.
***4. Hrithik Roshan (KMG)***- Oh me gosh! I can’t believe it I have him on my list that too on the 4th rank. I really liked his shedding of his STAR image and being the character for once in his lifetime. It seems papa Roshan does some JAADU to him and his performance. I had really thought that it would be a lousy movie with him being the HERO type and the Indians suck at making a science fiction. Hey! Guess these guys wanted to prove everyone wrong. Perhaps that is how life is unpredictable.
***5. Juhi Chawla (3 Deewarien)***- Though I so wanted to give it to her for Jhankaar Beats, but my heart said that she did not only give an excellent performance in 3 Deewarein she also broke away from the mould of being THE HEROINE. Nagesh Kuknoor definitely deserves and applause for making Juhi perform in a certain manner, which made everyone think that the role was absolutely Just for Juhi. The scene where she threatens her husband is still so fresh in mind. She was mind blowing!
***6. Manoj Bajpai (Pinjar)***- This one is such a good actor that you can never take him like a filmee actor. He has his roots in Drama and that is exactly what comes across when you watch him emote with those eyes in Pinjar. The guilt, love and respect for womanhood all at the same time. Definitely Urmila was there to make the chemistry and timing successful, but it was Manoj Bajpai all the way whose mannerisms spoke volumes about his talent.
***7. Ajay Devgan (Gangajal)***- If there is someone who has emerged as an actor and evolved with every movie he performed in is **This One**. I’m yet to see him perform in a comedy movie. As police personnel he was awesome and I was awestruck. You know, there are very few whose performance helps their colleague’s acting too. Did u notice the change in and conviction in Gracy Singh’s acting in this movie? The best scene was definitely the one where he tries to stop all the villagers from killing the crooks.
***8. Rajpal Yadav (Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon)***- One thing similar in *Raja, Mr. India and Beta* is that all of them were Hero oriented subject, but the female lead was showered with all the importance and praises. Same thing happened with *MMDBCH*, but things got reversed this time. Even though the movie’s lens close character was Antra Mali a village belle, Rajpal Yadav left no stone unturned in giving the character the earthy feel required. He was truly the man of the soil. Very helpful, has no- concern for self, ready to do everything for love. Rajpal was so convincing in being a Head- over- Heels in love in his own sweet manner.
***9. Boman Irani and Saif Ali Khan (Darna Mana Hai)***- This was some combo to look forward. I remembered my dad (miss him a lot) telling me “Though I love cigarettes, I still love that story for the performances by both the actors.” Which, was the reason why went to watch that movie on a cinema hall. OH! It blew me off completely. Boman was weird in the beginning and then you suddenly start believing in him as the story progresses. Saif was distressed and you thought that either he will die or run away, but the way Saif acted in the end trying to give the same expressions as Boman and also watching Cartoon movies was excellent. Talk about performances this was one movie. And this was one STORY! Now, see how both of them have changed and Saif was seen doing only good job after this movie, like LOC, KHNH, and recently in EHT. Boman had his hands full with bouquets for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.

The Best of 2003
Well compared to the nightmare of 2002, 2003 was a much better year, where we had some hits, some good movies and some good performances also. So here goes for some real great performances of 2003.
1) Hrithik Roshan in Koi Mil Gaya: After his over the top performance in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, the knives were out for him, and he was almost on the verge of collapse. But then he answered his critics( includes me), with a superlative performance in Koi Mil Gaya as an autistic child. Whether its his pranks with the kids, weeping like a child or his shuffling walk, Hrithik was just brilliant. It would be a pity if the awards comitee decides to overlook his performance.
2) Ajay Devgan in Gangajal: This is a year in which Ajay excelled in diverse roles like that of a harassed husband(Bhoot), a tough as nuts Army Colonel(Zameen) and a honest cop( Gangajal). Alongside with predictable commercial fare like Chori Chori and Parwana. But after last year’s Deewangee where he was brilliant in a complex role, he again put in the same intensity and brilliance as a tough and honest cop, who is not averse to bending the law in Gangajal. Of course the best he would get for such outstanding performances would be a critic’s award.
3) Abhishek Bachan in Zameen: This year certainly showed that Abhishek is the worthy son of a worthy father. He was the only saving grace in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, and he did well in Kuch Na Kaho. But in Zameen as a cop with a tormented past, Abhishek was brilliant. He held his own against Ajay Devgan, and showed that he has the potential to make it.
4) Sunjay Dutt in Munnabhai MBBS: Just when we were gettting bored of Sanju baba’s gangster roles, here was a role that was totally different. Sunjay Dutt proved that he was already good at comedy in movies like Hasina Maan Jaayegi and Jodi No 1, but this was a totally different comedy from the David Dhawan types. As the street goon with a heart of gold, as the doctor who insists that patients must be cured by love, Sanjay Dutt was marvellous. Especially the scenes with his father, the scenes with his side kick Circuit( Arshad Warsi in another brilliant cameo), were superb.
5) Amitabh Bachan in Baghban: What a performance. This was certainly not the angry man we knew, shouting at the bad guys, but in a totally different role as a father who is abandoned by his selfish kids. Amitabh Bachan was outstanding in an otherwise routine movie. The scenes where he weeps after reading his wife’s letter, the scene where he and his wife separate, his romantic dalliances with Hema Malini, it was an awesome performance. Every aspiring youngster who wants to be an actor should watch this movie, to learn what acting is all about.
6) Irfan Khan in Haasil: He should walk away with all the awards for the Best Villian this year. As a student leader, who misleads them, he proved that villiany is not about shoting and snarling. Subdued, yet chilling, was his portrayal.
7) Manoj Bajpayee in Pinjar: Another great performance from this brilliant actor. As the tough Muslim guy, who abducts the girl he loves and then releases her, and finally helps her, Manoj was just too good. Especially the scene when he realises that the girl he loves doesn’t love him at all, he was just great.
8) Saif Ali Khan in Kal Ho Na Ho: He was just brilliant, in spite of the fact that Shahrukh had the author backed role. Especially the scene where he hears that Preity loves SRK, and his expressions were superb. His comic scenes with Shahrukh were also great.
9) Urmila Matondkar in Bhoot: This year Urmila Matondkar proved that while the Kareenas,Aishwaryas and Bipashas get inches of print, as far as performances go, they have a long way to go to match her. Just consider her 3 performances this year as a rebellious daughter in Tehzeeb, a Partition victim in Pinjar and a possesed housewife in Bhoot. Urmi has proved that she is more than just a Rangeela girl, she is a superb actress. As the possesed housewife in Bhoot, she was great. From a normal loving housewife to one who is aware of something and her possesed state, Urmi put in a natural performance. Ash you might make it to the cover of Times, but as far as acting goes ur way behind Urmi baby.
10) Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Na Ho: After her disastrous attempts to play a vamp in Armaan, Priety was again back to form with this movie. As a girl who is mature beyond her age, one who has to bear the constant troubles at homes to a bubbly youngster and finally to a girl who must come to terms with the death of her love, Priety was great, though the same cant be said of her character.
11) Sushmita Sen in Samay: It’s a well known fact that face to face Sush is a much better actress than Ash. She has more variety in her roles compared to Ash, and in Samay she again proved that. As a single lady cop, who mothers a child, and who must face the grisly reality of a murder, Sush was just great. Especially in the scenes where she handled the murder investigation, Sush was just superb.
12) Antara Mali in Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon: As the small town girl Chutki who aspires to be like her idol Madhuri Dixit, Antara was brilliant. Whether it was her impersonations of Madhuri’s various songs, or her disappointment of not making it, or her reaction on seeing her movie open to empty houses, Antara proved that she was a real good actress.
13) Rajpal Yadav in MMDBCH: This talented actor was again brilliant in this movie. As the supportive, gullible husband of Chutki, who helps her in realizing her dreams he gave such an endearing and natural performance, that your heart went out to him.
14) Hema Malini in Baghban: At 60, she certainly showed that looks wise and talent wise, she is much much better than her daughter. It was great to see her after a long gap and she gave such a delightful and endearing performance. Whether it was giving a piece of mind to her granddaughter’s boyfriend, or having to bear the taunts of her son, she was good. Especially great was the scene where she separates from her beloved husband.
A final word please.I hope that the awards comitee would take into account the actor’s performances and not the film’s outcome at the box office. After all when Titanic swept the Oscars, neither Kate Winslet nor Leonardo Di Caprio won the Best Actress/Actor awards.

National award nominations for performance 2003
The year 2003 has seen a drastic change in Tamil cinema with lot of new talents in all fields emerging successfully especially the new actors and the many top heroes and directors could not make an impression with their usual masalas .Let me come to the field of Performance by actors, the flop of the usual masala movies have been a lesson to many heroes who are monotonous in choosing the roles and acting and who never try anything different.
I categorize the nominees for best perfromance as
Best actor in a leading role (Male) - Kamal, Vikram, Surya, Madhavan, Danush, Srikanth
Best actress in a leading role (Female) - Shena, Simran, Saritha, Laila, Jyothika
Best Performance by a Newcomer (Male) Boys, Ravi, Nanda, Venkat prabhu
Best Performance by a Newcomer (Female) - Soniagarwaal, Rekha, Sadha, Chayasingh, Geetu mohandas
Best Performance in a Supporting role (Male) - Manoj k.jayan, Prakashraj, Daniel balaji
Best Performance in a supporting role (Female) - Devadarshini, Malavika avinash, Sangeetha
Best performance in a negative role (Male/Female)-Jeevan, kotasreenivasarao, telangana sakuntala
Best performance in a comedy role (Male/female) - Vivek, Vadivel
And the winning performances are
Best performance in a leading role
1. Kamal haasan (Anbe sivam)
He has not acted but just reacted for the situation and he is so natural in this movie. He always takes too much care on his make-up in all his films and obviously in this film too. His make-up with stitches in his face to look like a face of a man after a bus accident is perfect. The dialogue delivery, the voice modulation, the mannerisms and his body language everything is different and worth wondering. And undoubtedly this is the best performance of the year.
2. Vikram (Pithamagan)
Vikram’s performance in Pithamagan is incredible with lot of homework. You hardly find the actor vikram in Chittan character. Even though it is an exaggerated character his performance makes everything believable and even stunning at some places and especially when he cries in the climax. He has lost some 10 kilos for this movie and the looks are shabby like a Graveyard undertaker as the character demands it. He has conveyed everything through his eyes and his body and doesn’t utter a single piece of dialogue in the film except the song that he sings before the dead bodies and the dialogue”Sakthi venum” in the climax. No doubt he is the next kamal in Tamil film industry.
3. Surya (Pithamagan)
He is not far behind Vikram in choosing different roles and this character is just opposite to his personal character. He has played such a freak out talkative fraud in this movie. He looks, costumes are perfect and hilarious. He scores a lot in comedy and his way of delivering dialogues, his voice modulation are close to perfection .Especially he has well acted in scenes and too childish where he speaks unconsciously due to over dosage of liquor. Even he dominates Vikram at some places in this movie. Yet another unforgettable performance of lifetime.
4. Surya (Kaaka Kaaka)
Again Surya played a usual role in an unusual manner as a cop in the film kaaka kaaka. In pithamagan he was a 420 fraud and in this movie he is genuine cop. A versatile performance in the year 2003. This film is a breakthrough in his career. His physique, mustache, and his subtle performance attracted me a lot. I saw this movie twice just because of Surya.Particularly in the scene where he sees jyothika shot dead and his reaction ,his dialogue delivery with tears in his eyes makes the scene emotional and makes a great impact on the audience. We have got yet another versatile actor in Tamil cinema.
5. Danush (Kadhal Konden)
The most underestimated hero of tamil cinema. He has done excellent job in this film.
His face and his physique suits the character well. But arrogance inside such a calm and childish face is stunning and surprising. His firstday in the classroom, scene where he is between aathi and sonia before the intreval block, the canteen scene, the climax scene where he asks sonia to love him,and the cimax when falls from mountain with a smile in his face looking at sonia are the scenes where his expressions and his acting are excellent.his dance is also good espacially in ’’thottu thottu’’ song.
6. Madhavan (Nalathamayanthi)
Madhavan’s performance in this Nalathamayanthi is all about an innocent Brahmin guy who goes is search of job to Australia and unfortunately loses his passport in Australia and his survival in Australia and how he returns back to India. Madhavan’s choco baby face suits this character very much. He has tried his best to speak in Palghat Tamil. The movie is hilarious with his timely dialogues and his actions and he carries the movie all over with ease. Timing is very important for comedy and he has managed well to deliver the dialogues with proper timing.
Best actress in a leading role
1. Saritha (July ganapathy)
There is no need of a versatile actress Saritha who has been in this industry for past 20 years. This is a kind of role that cannot be replaced by any other actress. She plays the a role a halfminded, unpredictable lady who is crazy about a writer and falls love on him and arrests him to make him love her. Her eyes speak more than anything. She has an expressive face and her stout body and her costumes add life to the character. Especially I liked her performance when she proposes to the writer.
2. Jyothika (Kaaka Kaaka)
She is the most promising actress of recent times. She acts well and there is a complaint that she overacts sometimes and I think that is a great honor. She has expressive face and eyes. Her performance in this movie is very different in the sense she doesn’t react much and so natural and looks live and it is completely different from those roles that she has played so far.
3. Sneha (Parthiban kanavu)
She is the only good looking promising Tamil speaking Tamil cinema actress now. She was doing same of college girl roles but in this movie she has improved and matured as a good character artist. She plays a dual role in this film and the both the characters are entirely different one as a homely wife and another as a freak out modern girl. She scores in both the roles and has put efforts to show a good difference between the two characters.
4. Laila (Pithamagan)
She has been called as the unlucky actress in Tamil cinema because all her movies flopped but her performance in this movie completely changed her career. She is as natural as a polytechnic student and a village girl she looks more beautiful than ever. She makes us to laugh with her arrogant performance in initial comedy scenes with surya and us to cry in the climax scenes. It was a surprise seeing laila performing so well than ever before. It is necessary to mention about “Savitha” who dubbed for laila in this movie she has done a good job.

Warne & Mcgrath ... Actors In Crime!
Being an Aussie cricketer is difficult.
I wonder why the Aussies call themselves cricketers. They should be called actors, instead. No, I am not doubting their abilities with bat and ball, they are very good (unless God aka a certain Sachin Tendulkar smashes the daylights and nightlights out of them), but they are one helluva talented bunch when it comes to acting ...
*Act I, Scene I:*
Sha*m*e Warne wants to run for Miss Universe and is desperate to reduce weight. A couple of diuretics do the trick and when caught, he acts innocent, becoming mama’s chweety-pie ...
*’’My mama gave me the pill!’’*
Fast Forward.
*Act III, Scene IV:*
Glen Mcgrath spits venom against a resilient Ramnaresh Sarwan. Fingers are pointed, expletives are hurled and push almost came to shove. But then, Glen is such a fine actor that he convinced the match referee, Mike Procter to let him off with a mere warning.
*’’Mr. Procter, I swear that I didn’t swear. I was merely singing Eminem’s latest track ...’’*
In fact, after having seen some inspid performances in Bollywood in recent years, I was tempted to offer a film to any of the Australian cricketers. It’s a different matter that I was beaten to the post by the gentleman who offered Steve Waugh to play the lead in a film on Udayan.
However, times are-a-changing. No, most films are still concentrating on drivers, servants, parrots and dogs, while songs are now concentrating on how Chandu’s paternal uncle forced his wife to taste chutney with a silver spoon (Almost sounds decent enough in English, doesn’t it?). However, actors are, well, acting ... (and about time too). So here are 20 acting performances are as good, if not better than Warne and Mcgrath ...
**10-1**
# 10. **Rahul Bose (Jhankaar Beats).**
After a brilliant performance in Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, it’s time for Rahul to play funny. Simply hilarious as the disbeliever in love, he demonstrates a wonderful sense of comic timing. And not just that, his expressions when he remembers the good old days with Nikki are perfect.
*’’Basanti did not dance for Veeru.’’
’’Look at the brighter side, atleast ab tere ko pata hai ki tera baap kaun hai ...’’*
# 9. **Shabana Azmi (Tehzeeb).**
Shabana Azmi has always been a seasoned performer who impressed me to the hilt in Masoom, but I feel, tended to go over the top in certain other movies. She puts in a wonderful performance in a role, where she had the chance to go over the top and scream like the saas-bahu cult, yet she puts in a brilliant understated performance.
# 8. **Preity Zinta (Armaan).**
Since I have not seen Irfan Khan’s Haasil, I would tip pretty Preity to win the Best Villian award this year. Armaan was not the best of movies, but Preity made the movie worthwhile. Her role is more of a spoilt brat, rather than that of someone spiteful, and Preity’s amazing portrayal made the audience root for the spoilt Priety rather than the positive Gracy.
# 7. **Boman Irani (Munnabhai MBBS).**
Sunju fans must be miffed at me rating him so low down (he is at no.20), but the fact remains that Munnabhai MBBS was a one-man film. Boman Irani, playing his second eccentric character in succession is hilarious as the harrassed Dean. Watch out for him when he loses his cool!
# 6. **Saif Ali Khan (Kal Ho Na Ho).**
The most under-rated actor of the industry, someone who proved that he can do diverse roles with his previous flick Darna Mana Hai, and the man with the best comic timing I have ever seen, without Saif Ali Khan, forget kal, aaj bhi nahin hota ... This one of the best performances of the year, as he makes you fall off your seats and guffaw with his stupendous comic timing, coupled with witty dialogues and situations. He is simply brilliant when he is drunk (*’’I am confused, kya woh Mohammed Ali hai?’’ ’’Mujhe lag raha hai ki hum log school ja rahe hain ... kya zinda logon ko yaad nahin kiya jaata?*) And then, he is not just a Jim Carrey. His reactions at knowing that Priety loves SRK, at knowing that SRK is terminally ill, and the silent expression he gives while staring at Shah Rukh in the hospital bed ... he doesn’t shed a tear, doesn’t mutter a dialogue in that bicycle-tyre voice of his, yet the shock and sorrow comes through amazingly. Hats off to this person who was considered a non-actor until two years ago, and yet has made Kal Ho Na Ho a one man show ...
# 5. **Urmila Matondkar (Bhoot).**
I am not known to think a lot, but I actually thought that Urmila Matondkar spoilt Deewaangee. I am not known to think at all, but I actually thought that she is the perfect example of ’No clothes, no acting’. And she proved me wrong.
We actually get the feeling that the poor girl is actually possessed, for Urmila delivers a power-packed performance. Her best scene is when the sight of the ghost makes her speechless and numb with fear, and she cannot even call out to her husband, who is sleeping on the other side of the bed.
# 4. **Victor Banerjee (Joggers’ Park).**
Victor Banerjee tastes victory again after a good performance in Bhoot. The word ’brilliant’ would be an understatement! Apart from stupendous dialogue delivery and comfort in conversing in both Hindi and English, the key to watch is his body language. His nervousness at first meeting Jenny, which turns into curiosity, then friendship, then love and then even possessiveness is brilliantly displayed. And yes, to signify possessiveness, he doesn’t need to stammer J-j-j-j-Jenny!
# 3. **Amitabh Bachchan (Baghban).**
Amitabh Bachchan is back, and how! After the disgusting piece of garbage called Boom, Amitabh regains his fans’ trust with Baghban. He is the life of Baghban. Although I think he tended to go over the top in the first half an hour, his performance is brilliant from the moment his sons decide to shelter Raj and Pooja separately, turn by turn. Watch out for the scene after that, when Hema gives him the proverbial ’kasam’ and he displays a plethora of emotions without uttering a single word. Shock, disappointment, anguish and rage manifest as he wears his coat, while the couple are leaving. The manner in which he wears the coat and his body language in that sequence are simply brilliant! The clincher is when he gives a speech at the end of the movie. Bachchan brings back the era of KBC where he buttons his blazer, rubs his palms and bellows, ’’Devion sajjanon.’’ I half expected him to rattle off fifteen questions! Although he refrains from asking questions, the speech which he gives is mind-blowing. The theatre where I saw Baghban may have had merely 40 people in the hall, but I daresay atleast 30 of them had whipped out their handkerchiefs. The others, I guess, must have forgotten to bring their kerchiefs along ...
#2. **Naseerudin Shah (3 Deewaarein).**
The finest actor of Bollywood is a delight to watch. Playing the happy-go-lucky smooth talker, Naseer is simply brilliant. 3 Deewaarein, as a film, not only showcases an interesting story with a suspense, but also delves in into the psyche of a prisoner who is counting his last days. Naseer’s ’I don’t care a damn about the death sentence’ attitude is outrageous, and only he has the expertise to be convincing in such a pivotal role.

***2003 and movies, every news magazine is saying how much flush with money has it left our industry with. In simple terms, there were quite a few films which left a mark at Box Office. And surprisingly enough number of characters and performances too made a mark. This is my collection of the best performances. What I have tried to do is assess the performance and not the character. I have tried to keep it short, so it may not be detailed but a lot has been written about these performances in all probability in first place. The classification is from the mainstream movies only, I have avoided off beat cinema since I did not catch much of it and nor am I a big fan of it either. And I know I am a nerd, zombie and martian all put together, but this is the best classification anyone could come up with and if you dont agree with it well then go eat dinosour meat:@ ***
1. **Amitabh Bachan: Baghban -** Superb, proves that despite short comings in the script, can still carry a film on his shoulders. The final scene encore was effortless, spontaneous and emotion laden, deserves best actor award for sure.
2. **Manoj Bajpayee: Pinjar -** Another actor discovers the depths his eyes can convey without speaking. Given an almost uncontrollably difficult role with directors attention focussed on Urmila, Bajpayee reaffirms the faith that actors are born, not created.
3. **Urmila Mantodkar: Bhoot - **Bhoot was cliche, it was routine and it would have been boring as well save for Urmila who turns in a performance that is surely the best thing to come from mainstream cinema in a long time. Her intensity and consistency amazes as does her final shedding of marathi accent in Hindi.
4. **Preity Zinta: Armaan - **Its not easy to get an irritating character and still be liked by audience. Remember Poo of K3G? It was easy for her to get lost in the loud louder loudest dialogues she had to mouth, but despite getting on nerves, there was a certain innocence in her approach, which makes it the best performance in negative role this year. It had an emotional undercurrent. (* And no there is no biasing here:p *)
5. **Boman Irani: MMBBS - **Superlative, classy and definitely from the top drawer. Boman Irani had already done an encore with DMH but this time he excells even himself, his dialogue delivery is impeccable and his use of facial muscles minimal, his performance is out of the real top bracket.
6. **Hrithik Roshan: KMG - **He gets a dream role, and he plays it on like a dream. Right from preparations of physical appearance to dialogue delivery to dancing, the Hrithik in the movie was consistent through out the movie save for few minutes in climax. But still on, he chugs at your heart and does what other contemporaries are still dreaming of doing, become India’s foremost star actor.
7. **John Abraham: Jism - **Sonia Khanna had the author backed role, she had the camera following her and she had the costumes, yet it was her hubby who got the acting going. As a burnt out missionless bachelor who treads the wrong path, John turns in a performance that many star sons can only dream of doing.
8. **Saif Ali Khan: KHNH - **Karan Johar movie and you outshine SRK, thats the power of Saif’s performance. Although it is to be fair that Karan did write Saif’s part well but still despite a huge DCH hangover, Saif adds an emotional non-chalance to the role so much so that he actually forms better chemistry with Preity in the film. His performance in the climax is the best.
9. **Hema Malini: Baghban - **She looked gorgeous and acted even better. She got a more difficult role than Amitabh Bachan in the film. Not only had she got to look good but she also had to tug on with tear buds, and she does it with a restraint which screen mothers usually dont do so. Watch for her performance on her son’s birthday scene, she just eats Aman Verma and Suman Rnagnatham.
10. **Preity Zinta: KHNH - **Naina Catherine Kapur was a most boring character any heroine could play. Wear specks for 80 percent of the movie, dress in non-glamorous clothes for most of the movie save for three songs and on top of that, marry the wrong guy. Yet, Preity added the special urbane flavor to the film. Needless to say, it was her and Saif’s performance which added to the fresh factor in the film and is keeping its run sustained in multiplexes.
** Some of the other performances which I liked are: ***
**Ajay Devgan** in **Bhoot** was the best thing in the film along with Urmila and in some scenes post interval does an impeccable job.
**Paresh Rawal** in **Hungama **was wonderful and nuanced in his over the top performance.
**SRK **finished much of **KHNH **without his trademark emotional twitching.
**Urmila **in **Pinjar **forgot the Punjabi accent but still made it up by her eyes.
**John Abraham **followed up Jism with a sincere and consistent performance in **Saaya**
**Amitabh Bachan** was one of the best things in **Armaan **till he was there.
**Gracy Singh** sizzled in **Armaan** with her sweet next girl role and a simple yester year performance.
**Sanjay Dutt** in **MMBBS** provides the best performance from his side in a million years.
**Preity Zinta** in **KMG** gets additional brownie points for playing the 2003’s best typical heroine role with aplomb and looking oh so cute.
**Jaya Bachan** in** KHNH** reminded us that natural performances are still her forte.
*
And finally along with Amitabh Bachan in Baghban, the one performance that has changed our perception of Indian cinema.
***Bipasha Basu ***literally seduced an entire nation into collective hypnotism with her no holds barred portrayal of a sex bomb and throwing the traditional Hindi heroine role out of the window. If Amitabh Bachan insured that from now on, 60 year olds will get roles written for them, Bipasha Basu insured that heroines from now on would be different and demanding.
**I have missed some names and I will update it as I remember them. And I may not have watched movies like Tehzeeb, Dhoop(completely) and Haasil(again completely).**

Movers and Shakers of 2003
Firstly, I would like to make everyone clear that these are my choices and my choices need not be universal truths. And secondly, I have selected the performances irrespective of the popularity of actors or the BO success of the movies. Disappointed SRK fans must honestly tell me as to whome he would have replaced in the Top 10 list.
Top Twenty Performances of 2003
1. Om Puri in Dhoop
Om Puri plays the role of a father whose son, dies in the Kargil war. His scenes where he mourns his son’s death, where he cajoles Revathy to accept the petrol pump offer, his tryst with the corruption and red-tapism, his altercations with corrupt officials in various govt. departments, are just fantastic. But his best scene has to be when he is asked for proof that he is indeed the father of the deceased captain. He takes out some photographs and selects a photo where he is carrying his son’s dead body. Not only were the characters in the scene in tears but also the audience.
2. Amitabh Bachchan in Baghbaan
An actor’s acting credentials comes to the fore the best when he rises above the script or the clichéd role. Amitabh displays this talent in Baghbaan. He plays the role of a father who sacrifices everything for their sons but in turn is spurned by them when he is no longer a milking cow for his sons. Whether he is romancing Hema Malini, or making sacrifices for his sons, or getting humiliated by them or rejecting them in the climax, Amitabh gives us the proof (if we ever needed) how versatile he is. His climax scene where he gives an emotional speech brings lump to your throat.
3. Naseeruddin Shah in Teen Deewarein
Naseer plays the role of a petty thief who is jailed for a committing a murder. He is unapologetic and unrepentant about his act and always maintains that the murder was an accident. Whether he is professing his obsession for his freedom, or planning his escape, or is confessing to Juhi about his plans to escape, or his emotional outbursts, or passing witty remarks, or taunting the inmates, or developing friendship with his inmates, he does this all with panache.
4. Shabana Azmi in Tehzeeb
She plays the role of an ambitious and a successful singer who always puts her career ahead of her family much to the chagrin of her daughter, who is not on good terms with her. Shabana Azmi once again proves her brilliance. Whether she is giving importance to her singing career, or attempting reconciliation with her daughter, or conveying her version of the story, or confronting her daughter, Shabana lends her character a tinge of boisterousness, narcissism, and vivaciousness to it.
5. Manoj Bajpai in Pinjar
He is brilliant in the movie and brings various shades to his character impeccably. Whether showing his lust and love for Urmila, or taking revenge by kidnapping Urmila, or showing his anger when his farm is burnt, or repenting his sin of fuelling the communal fire, inciting violence, or redeeming himself by helping out find Himanshu’s sister, he has displayed these emotions perfectly.
6. Juhi Chawla in Teen Deewarein
She plays the role of a documentary filmmaker, who in her quest to make a film on the three convicts develops a strong relationship with them. Pursuant to her interactions with them she starts discovering herself and musters enough courage to stand to the atrocities of her husband. Her scenes with the three convicts where she tries to elicit the truth from them though her smooth talk and her scenes with Naseer where they discuss their lives with each other are very poignant. The scene where she chides her husband strongly is one of her best scenes in the movie.
7. Irfan Khan in Haasil
He plays the role of an ambitious leader wanting to become the president of Student’s union. He brings various dimensions to his role of a villain. He is obsessive (lusting for Hrishita Bhatt), manipulative (using Jimmy Shergil as a pawn in his hands), menacing (bumping off anyone who is obstruction in his ambitions), comical (mouthing some witty one-liners), or being philosophical (he is the student of Arts). After a very long time someone has played a villainous character who looks menacing through his acting and not get-ups.
8. Hrithik Roshan in Koi..Mil Gaya.
Hrithik as an autistic person is first rate. He has taken great pains in portraying the character and the effort shows. Just watch the scene where he confronts his teacher and boasts “Aap ne kaha tha na sir, apne baap se seekh kar aao, main apne papa se seekh kar aaya hoon”. The facial expression with which he says this shows that he knows what acting is all about. Watch out for the scene where the computer teacher insults Hrithik and the quick repartee by him and his confrontation with Rekha after failing in “sixth standard”.
9. Urmila in Bhoot
Sans make-up, Urmila Matondkar as the possessed lady is mind-blowing. It is highly possible to go overboard in the possessed scenes but she manages to carry of such scenes without going overboard or being funny. She has managed to add some nuances to the one-dimensional role. Like when she seduces Ajay, or when she acts like a typical housewife, or when she is embarrassed by her act of walking in sleep, or when she stabs Ajay, or when she is not being able to get over her obsessive state. Her best scene is the one where she, after seeing the bhoot, tries to wake-up Ajay but could not.
10. Saif Ali Khan in Kal Ho Na Ho
Saif as Rohit Patel is first rate and has given a brilliant performance. He has his presence felt in spite of SRK, who has got the maximum footage. Watch out for his expressions in the scene, where he is about to propose Preity when Preity tells Saif that she loves SRK or for his antics in some scenes like “Who Mohammed Ali tha”.
11. Sanjay Dutt in Munna Bhai MBBS
He plays the role of local goon, who becomes a fake doctor to appease his father. His flair for comedy is clearly evident in the whole movie, whether he is healing patients with wisecracks and love, or when he is troubling the dean, or when he is dabbling with medicines or experiments in the medical college, or when he is indulging in antics in the classroom.
12. Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Na Ho
Though her role is ill sketched, she has managed to give a lively performance. She effortlessly portrays the role of a girl who transforms from a boring girl into happy-go-lucky girl to a dejected lover and finally as Saif’s wife. Though she falters in emotional scenes she more than makes up with her radiance and demeanor in the light scenes.
13. Ajay Devgan in Gangajal
He plays the role of an honest cop undergoing different situations during his tenure. Though the role is a clichéd one he portrays it brilliantly. Whether he is fighting the corrupt system, or owning up the responsibility for the mistake of his subordinates, and finally becoming a crusader and eliminating the villains, he does it all with his inimitable style.
14. Shahrukh Khan in Kal Ho Na Ho
His character is no different from the ones we have seen in numerous Chopra/Johar movies. But he does have his moments in the movie. His performance in the title song where he imagines himself in Saif’s place, and in the scene where he reads out dialogues (non-existent) from Saif’s diary are top class. Add to that his comic scenes with Saif, he does entertain you in parts.
