Movie Review Of 3 Deewarein

Psst - This section will contain some inside trivia about the film.

Quotes - Good one liners from the movie.

Oops - Goofs From the movie.

Director – Nagesh Kukunoor

Screenplay – Nagesh Kukunoor

A city in Andhra Pradesh, (Probably Hyderabad). A Prison Warden Mohan (Gulshan Grover). There are 3 convicts who are going to walk the green mile. Jaggu (Jackie Shroff) is a lawyer who has been convicted of brutally murdering his wife. Nagya(Nagesh Kukunoor) is convicted of throwing his wife to a speeding car. Ishaan (Naseerudin Shah) is a happy go lucky flamboyant charmer who has accidentally murdered a pregnant woman who was carrying twins while robbing a bank. Enters Chandrika (Juhi Chawla) who is a documentary film maker who wants to make a documentary on the 3 prisoners who are about to be hanged. Initially Inspector Mohan is reluctant but then agrees. We hear all the 3 stories. Nagya’s wife is a daughter of a high court judge and the judge is hell bent on seeing that Nagya gets the capital punishment. Jaggu has murdered his wife because she is having an extra martial affair. Ishaan is a charmer who just wants to get out of the jail at any given cost. Chandrika becomes friendly to all three of them. It all climaxes towards the Republic day when three prisoners will be given pardon by the chief minister for their good behavior. The story goes on till the amazing climax scene which brings a slight twist. This is movie making at its best. After Hyderabad blues when Nagesh Made Rockford, it seemed all over till bollywood calling became a word of mouth hit and 3 deewarein will be a hit in the league of bollywood calling if not hyderabad blues. Superb script which does not let the viewer leave till the very end. Good Editing by Sandeep and superb sound recording by. The Prison Scenes are very realistic and the scene where one of the prisoners perform homosexual act is very strongly depicted. Jackie Shroff, Juhi Chawla and Gulshan Grover have acted well. Nagesh Kukoonoor has got the best supporting actor award in my books. But the real hero of the movie is Naseerudin Shah who has yet again proved that he is the best actor in India. Watch the movie. No true movie buff will miss it. Also watch out for the scene where Chandrika interoggates all the 3 prisoners for the first time. That is the finest scene of the movie.

Psst -

1) I saw this movie in a preview show 5 days before the actual release. I had the honour to meet and talk to Nagesh Kukuonor for a good 10-15 minutes. I asked him if he was inspired by the Shawshank Redemption to make 3 deewarein. He said although he regards shawsank redemption as one of the finest film ever made he was not inspired to make 3 deewarein from that movie but he was inspired to make the movie by an actual prison documentary that he saw. He said there was no comparison between the characters that Tim Robbins played and that which Naseerudin Shah played as both were in complete contrast to each other. On a personal note I also felt that here is a man who is so down to earth and genuinely one of the finest persons in the film industry. Something like this I have seen only in Dev Anand.

2) Although you can see shades of The Green Mile, Dead Man Walking, Midnight express and The Shawsank Redemption, 3 deewarein has a charm of its own.

3) Movie was delayed in releasing by nearly 1 year as no distributor wanted to touch a non-pot boiler film.
