TRAGIC AND POIGNANT

After a gap of more than two years, Selvaraghavan returns with his new offering ’’7G Rainbow colony?. Sounds different, eh? It is. But ’7 G ’ has its share of merits (lots of them) and demerits (Just few). We would go into those details later.

’’ 7G’’ is the story of a young, aimless, arrogant and utterly dumb Kathir (Ravi Krishna) and his transformation after the entry of Anita (Sonia Agarwal). The two are not the most correct people in the world, but their love makes them forget even the wrong things they are doing. This fleeting moment is expressed in a wonderful shot on Sonia Agarwal who expresses her desires knowing that what she is doing is wrong. One might ask, what?s different in that? The difference is that, a Teenage love story has made into an Extraordinary tale.’’ 7 G’’ does that with extreme efficiency. It is a combination of cohesive screenplay, strong script, polished performances, good music, and able direction.

’’ 7 G ’’ doesn?t end there. It?s a tragedy of gargantuan proportions. A kind of ending many directors would hesitate to take. But kudos to Selva Raghavan for making it in the way he wanted. His class is being shown to the fullest. He is bundle of immense talent and after just three films; I would say he is up there with the best in the business.

How can today’s audience accept a tragedy? Well, it has to be realistic, straight forward and should have very high emotional value.’’ 7 G ’’ has a lot of of poignant moments which would linger in your mind for a long time. For example, the scene in which Kathir?s father (Vijayan) tells about his son getting a job. That scene is just so wonderfully shot that it brings tears to your eyes. But few scenes could have been less graphic. For example, the accident of Anita is shown so brutally that your heart misses a beat. Another scene is the lovemaking scene between Kathir and Anita (wonderfully shot), interrupted by a crass item number (As though Sonia Agarwal was any less hot). Besides these two hitches ’’ 7 G ’’ is a first-Rate product. I would recommend even non-Tamil moviegoers to watch this movie.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is a major plus to the movie. The songs don?t play an important role in this movie (surprising). It?s the background score, which takes you by storm. This score would make even his father proud, who is a genius at re-recordings.

A lot of pieces linger in your mind. How one wishes an OST of just the background score is released. The songs disappointed me. They could have been better? But then, thats asking for too much from the youngster.

Photography by Arvind Krishna is refreshing and different. No jerks and unique colour for different shots. The lightings are very unique and different. Nice attempt.

A tragic love story needs strong performances. How lucky should Ravi Krishna consider himself? His father producing the film, an excellent director and a great role upfront. He is just perfect as Kathir and doesn?t seem to be nervous at all in his first film. He gives his best and should thank his stars for such a good role in his first film.

As the boy who turns into a man, he is just about perfect.

The reason for the boy turning into a man is Anita. It?s a really tough and challenging role for even an established actress. But guess what, Sonia Agarwal takes the film from everybody, and makes it her own. She lives the role of Anita. She is nothing short of extraordinary and her expression just takes one by surprise. An award is for the taking. With absolutely no contenders even remotely close she is sure to get the award for best actress. Sonia Agarwal has everything in her to make herself the best in the business. She has a beautiful face, a no-nonsense attitude and a lot of talent. Her no fuss attitude towards doing an intimate scene when the role demands is also a big plus. She needs to select her films from here on & start rejecting sub-standard stuff. All major directors will be eyeing her. She is such a precious talent and the country needs to see her. It would be better if she starts acting in Hindi as well.

After a Long time we have been given a good tragedy, with a positive ending. The hero tries to commit suicide but then changes. Though he becomes a schizophrenia patient his love for Anita makes him survive.

That?s the positive yet tragic tale of ’’ 7 G Rainbow colony’’

A brave, good attempt.
