Simply Superb!

The magic recreates again… It almost feels like as if Sanjay Leela Bhansali has taken a great risk by making this movie in modern age. More so, he has taken even greater risk by defying all conventional forms of music and went ahead with the music he wanted. What does he do? Promptly does he asked Ismail Darbar to compose the music, and he carries on from where he left with HDDCS. This time around, the music is more classy, more classical, and more of substance. Certainly the music of Devdas is not for everyone to hear, and it would be difficult to say how the music will fare.

Reviewing a classical based album is always too difficult. And with the wide variety that Ismail Darbar provides in this album its all the more difficult to review the songs! Nonetheless I have tried to review this album, and hopefully I do justice to it! So here goes.

The album begins off with Silsila hain pyar ka sung by the new comer Shreya Goshal. She is going to be the next BIG thing in music industry. With a flawless voice she takes over you completely. The song describes a girl waiting for her lover to come by. Shreya Goshal does full justice to the song. One has to hear this song to really appreciate it.

Next comes the publicized song Maar Daala sung by Kavitha k. Its another brilliant song in the album. The song immediately reminds you of the qawalli based songs which used to come in late 60s. Check out the brilliant classical composition of the song, especially between the first antra and the first mukhda…its too good!

Bairi Piya follows next which is a good melodious love song. It is the kind of song which prominently which featured on HDDCS album. Udit Narayan excels in this song. Check out the background music in this song…every instrument is real, and no synthesizer!

Kaahe Chhed Mohe is a out and out classical song, and also composed by a classical vocalist Pandit Birju Maharaj, who also sings the song. Kavitha. K gives him company. The songs sounds more like as if a teaching session is going between a master and pupil. The classical part of the song is simply superb! The classical climatic sequence is superb…all kudos to the music director. This is certainly a song which will appeal to only those people who kind of like classical or semi-classical music.

The next song on the CD is Chalak Chalak which for me is not amongst the top songs of the album. The song is about…well..alcohol and how lovely it is to have it! Certainly a interesting song, but somehow, I didn’t like the tune so much. It sounds as if the song were made for the front benchers.

The next song Hamesha Tumko Chaha again features a kind of north Indian pahadi style music. This is a kind of song which takes it own time to grow on you. There are a lot of back ground vocals on this music, but its beautiful. Again a great song.

The next song Woh Chand Jaisi Ladki is probably the best song in the album. Udit Narayan simply excels in this song. This is a kind of song which reminds of Sonu Nigam and his pop songs. However! This is much much better song. The song talks about the lover recalling his love. Check out how Ismail Darbar mixes guitar as background in the first few sentences, and then switches over to sitar and tabla effortlessly to the rest of the song. Simply put, it’s the best song in the album!

Morey Piya follows next which is the female version of her sadness in life. Somehow, I didn’t find this song so good. May be the script demanded such a song. The song is like the ones we heard in 60s…somewhat similar to style of those village and dholak song. Again there is the influence of classical music in the song. Certainly, it’s a song which I am looking forward to see on screen as it makes which makes me wonder as to where it fits in the script!

Devdas-The theme is again superb to hear. The song takes of mildly and then ascends into a tense music. The instruments keep adding to the song, and add to the overall haunting effect of the song. The song also features background vocals, which make it all the more superb. The last part of the song climbs into a nicely paced vocal-instrumental music. ( this is the part of the theme which featured in the first AD of Devdas). Certainly a great theme.

Dola re Dola is the duet which Shreya Goshal and Kavitha.K sing. This is the song which is going to feature the jugal bandi dance between Aishwarya and Madhuri…boy I am looking forward to it! The song immediately reminds you of Doli Taro from HDDCS, and is very similar to style and composition. The song is good, and this is one song which appeal to general masses! For me, its not again the best song in the album. Well those were the songs on the album.

The film has 10 songs, and I would love to see all 10 songs in the film! The lyrics by Nusrat Bidr are simple and beautiful. Shreya Goshal is certainly the find of the film, and with her great voice she is bound to capture everyone’s heart! All credits must also go to Ismail Darbar for giving such difficult music. Certainly, not everyone can mix classical music in mainstream music and walk away with it.

Lastly, I think its Sanjay Leela Bhansali who should be applauded for defying the conventional forms of music and give us some GREAT music to hear, and cherish for days to come. Go buy Devdas..its Brilliant! Happy Listening!
