A sad story...

Hey there.

This is my 2nd review here, so don’t be too harsh on me in the comments :-P. I came here today to tell you a little story about a 16-year old boy. A boy named Kander.

One day Kander was bored. Not bored, BORED. He had a crappy computer (P166) and needed a new one. So he saved. And saved. And saved. Eventually he had enough money to buy his new PC, an he got an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with lotsa technical acronyms on the box and a few CD-Rom’s to get him started. So when he got home and hooked everything up he decided to try out some of the CD’s. On one of those CD’s he found Trend Micro’s PC-Cillin 2002. ’’Oooh! Cool! A free virusscanner that came with my mobo’’ he thought. So he installed PC-Cillin. Things went pretty much OK, customer support was fairly good and updates came and went week after week after week. Until one day Kander got a ’’funny’’ link from a (soon to be ex-)friend. The link was https://raus.de , a site that basically has a CRASH ME page in it using VBscript that manages to spawn a bunch of windows which in turn spawn even more new windows, leading to a lockup. PC Cillin did NOT stop it. ’’Big deal...’’ our hero thought and submitted it as a new virus to Trend Micro. Within a few days he got a nice reply, with a patch. Installed the patch. That’s when things went nasty. Every time a new update is released our champion of righteousness now has to press CTRL+ALT+DEL quickly and kill the POP3Trap application, which starts automatically after the Update. Kander does not use POP3 (only Webinterface Fastmail.fm) so he disabled it in the option menu. Unfortunatly every time this program starts it suddenly takes up 90% of all system resources, making the once-so-fast XP 1800+ perform worse than his P166. Customer Support couldn’t offer any advice better than remove, reinstall. If that don’t work format c:\, which is not a workable option for me considering the amount of schtuff I keep on my disk.

Bottom line: Great light-weight Antivirus program. Until things go wrong.
