The first time I heard the music of Asoka, I thought ‘Oh! Wow, Rahman has come up with another spellbinding score!’…later I was surprised to see that it is Anu Malik who has scored the music..and I thought…’Even Anu Malik can create magic!’. I listened to the music on https://indiafm.com, and therefore, I didn’t know at first who was the music director. Yes people, put away your work, get that CD player running, relax, and take a journey across time from this wonderful music score of Asoka. So lets get going!
The first song I heard was San Sanana, sung by Alka Yagnik and Hema Sardesai. Both of them excel in this song, which talks about a girl searching for her perfect soul mate. Anu malik comes up with a strong background score with a great mix of western and classical sarangi. The combination just sounds too good to hear!
The next one is Raat ka Nasha, the song which is being publicized. Its another gem of a song. With a haunting tune, and even superb lyrics, this one is gonna stay in people’s mind for long. The song is in two versions, one only female, and other a duet version. Both the versions are same, but one could go on listening to them back to back forever! Chitra excels in giving us a sensual feel to this song. All in all, a truly enthralling song.
I presumed that Raat ka Nasha had to be the best song of the album. But I was wrong! For the next one was Roshni Se, which just swept me off my feat! The song begins slowly, climbs, and climaxes into a great end. The lyrics are again brilliant, but it’s the tune that captures one imagination. Full credit to Anu for creating a aura of the forgotten time in the song. Personally, for me, this is the best song in the album for me! Check out the beginning of this song, and Raat ka Nasha, both of them are brilliant.
The next one is the peppy song Aa Tayyar Hoja which sounds very much like a Malik song. Nonetheless, the song is great to hear to, and again well complemented by great lyrics! The song has a peppy beat to it, something which I find difficult to imagine in the times of Asoka, but who cares, when the song sounds so good! The only downside of the album I found was the song O Re Kanchi, where Anu Malik goes into familiar territory. The song is quite insipid, and really it’s a disgrace to put that song with such melodies. The song I believe should be immediately cut off from the album!
Lastly, full marks to Sandeep Chauta for coming up with yet another brilliant background score. The instrumental theme of Asoka is a just to be heard…for I cant express how good it is! Its just too good. The usage of flutes, immediately transports one into a bygone era. Its too haunting, and I would love this piece of music being repeated in the movie as many times it can. Asoka must surely rank as one of the best music to a movie this year, and more importantly, one of the best music given to a movie. Gulzar’s lyrics add charm to the songs, and make them even more wonderful than they would be.
All the songs have simple background scores, with lots of flutes, and classical stuff, and this helps in adding that ‘haunting’ effect on all these songs. With a brilliant cast, and a even brilliant director, I am hoping this movie is going to be one helluva movie! And if this movie succeeds, the music will have played a major role in doing that! Go get Asoka! Its one album you wouldn’t want to miss at any cost! Happy Listening!
