When first I saw its trailer on Super Movies, I thought it to be a very feminist kind of film. I decided not to watch it, but incidentally one day I came across this movie and came to know that my perception was quite wrong. In fact I enjoyed the movie very much.
It is not a story of women making up themselves in the shop, but it’s the story of every human being. It’s the story how people struggle in life. Same was the case with the main protagonist Gina Norris, played by Queen Latifah. I guess she was a widow who migrated from another town. She was a very good hair-stylist in the hi-fi beauty shop of Kevin Bacon as Jorge Christopher. Due to his discriminatory and unfair behavior Gina quitted the job and decided to open up her own beauty shop.
Story starts with the troubles and struggles she had to face to make the ends meet. One thing I like about her character is her strong will power and the belief to achieve her goal. Some of her problems were financial, racial etc. Her biggest trouble was her rival and competitor, her ex-boss. He was very much surprised to see her flourish and grabbing away his customers. So he with illegal means started charging her penalties on trivial matters by bribing the officer. But she never gave up until the incident when Jorge destroyed her shop by evil means. At that time she said to her boyfriend:
“I can not mend this one.”
With the help of her family and friends she again started to progress and also got rid of Jorge evil plans. And the movie ends happily.
Things I liked about the film was its story, character of Gina, and also the concept of joint family in U.S. Gina was living in a joint family system with her daughter, mother in law, and her sister in law, and due to which she succeeded all the atrocities.
Comedy was also very light and good. You actually started feeling a part of her shop with very amusing characters.
On the whole it’s a very cherishing, and a realistic movie, with a comedy touch and vibrant characters, of black society, which I liked it. This movie made the white girl wanted to become a black. It is a very good pass time movie.
