Well I have lived in bangalore throughout my life(and 20 years of eating out in such places).
These are places, which I have known since school / college and still love eating at small joints(breakfasts and evening snacks mainly - tiffins to be exact). Also lunch many a time.
These joints/places have been around even before the town got its n number of monikers(city of this and that and silicon valley what not).
Top seven joints/places of these joints are listed below. Most of them may not be new for those who have done their schooling or college in Bangalore.
*Veena Stores
I know much has been written in one of the local dailies and coming in the top 2 of the idly joints in bangalore.
Located in Malleswaram(front of the telephone exchange). Is open from early morning and you have limited menu starting with mouth watering idlis/vadas and chutney with a tinge of mint. Also chow chow bath (upma & sheera together). Started off this mainly but also avalakki & shavige bath most of the time. No dosas - no sambar - so what? Parking is a big challenge as it is located at a busy intersection. Closes by 7.30 pm. Also closed between 12.30 & 3 pm.
*SLV
*Located in Banashankari II Stage(opp to the Park on the way to the complex).
Now the road bustles with lot of activity - used to be regulars when there was no park in front and not so much traffic.
Still makes nice idlis and like the way he mentions double and a vada. Double= 2 idlis!
Started off with a limited list and has some additional stuff after 3.30 pm.
Used to great food place for all the colleges located nearby - well now it is manna for all the people nearby!
Raghavendra Stores
Malleswaram Railway Station
This is a very small eating place just outside the railway station. only one of the eatouts where you take your car. You can actually park it in the railway station(not free). And eat piping hot idlis, vadas & chow chow bath.
SLV - Moolay hotel(corner hotel)
one located near Ramakrishna Ashram, Basavanagudi
Started off as a small corner shop which is graduated to the one you see today.
We used to scramble for food there once upon a time. Now it is big and fortunately the food still tastes the same.
Brahmins Coffee Bar
Chamarajpet
Idlis, snacks and quick service. What else do you need for breakfast or when you are just plain hungry.
Nagarathpet
Sun down & shutters down in the busy Chickpet & Avenue road area, guess who comes out. Not cops & others alone.
You get finger-licking dosas and idlis post 7.30 pm maybe upto midnight(sometimes beyond that too!) Don’t judge the place by the way it looks – there are families mostly from the business communities and all the oldtimers who got hooked to this place. If you have been in Bangalore for a while not eaten here, well ……….
Vidyarthi Bhavan(Gandhi Bazaar) or Janatha Hotel(Malleswaram)
Thick masala dosas. Depending in which part of the town you are, one can rank as the seventh one!
Safe eating.
Well there is more NMH & Dwaraka hotel MTR – quick bite is no longer possible!
If anyone wants directions to reach this place, leave a comment.
