Bunty aur babli? are you crazy?! Never! What song is that? jhola uthake chale? naah...not for me!
And then before I knew it I was watching the movie. And heard the first song in milliseconds. Enjoying myself immensely.
Not a technical review, I will say why you should listen to the music from BnB.
Lets begin with Dhadak Dhadak . So folksy, the tune refuses to leave your mind. One of the first times that the train sounds has been used to so well with the words dhadak dhadak, and so well supplemented by the instruments. A little flute here and there, some jhumar, some ... this song will captivate you.
Moving on, what you can hear is excitement, joy, praise, fun. On screen and on soundtrack in the title track Bunti aur Babli. Using typical north indian lingo (not Punjabi, not gujarati, not Maharashtrian). Words that are teasing, and remind you of childhood things thenga dikhake chale, using rythm with words, (chalat chalat, jab ... ), it matches the rythmic name of the movie. The song has a tarana feel to it, and though long, is fun. Youll find yourself humming it, and looking up the lyrics online.
Nach Baliye leaves you unmoved. Catchy beats, this song may do well in the discs, but thats about it. Typical modern song, there is no USP in this, but it definitely is a song which cant be called bad. Tolerable enough.
Chup Chup ke is a nice love song. the start is definitely interesting, and then the semi whispering tones of the singers, and the obvious enjoyment hooks you on to it. A song which grows on you, and which keeps you humming.
The most exceptional song is kajrare, which I fell could have had a better rendition, but its catchy as it is. Having a renovated Aishwarya Rai on the sets with father and son bees also helps for the masses. it is a nice mujra/quawalli, but could definitely have been better. Alisha is a good choice as a sedcutress voice, but she needs to have more range in her voice. and the words could have been improved upon.
The movie ends with Amitabh B rapping away BnB soundtrack, which is also fun.
The movie is what has made the soundtrack enjoyable. It fits in with the movie perfectly...its moods, its flair.
Throughout the songs the lyrics tease you with an odd english word thrown in here and there khali bore dopehro se, aankhein bhi kamal karti hain, personal se sawal karti hain etc.
The singing could have been many times better, especially with the female voices, which sound in dire need for practice. I like hoarse voices, I like women voices with a deep base, but I dont like voices which do injustice to songs.
However, all in all, a very enjoyable album. Kajrare could well have been a classic number were it not so lewd. But no regrets. An album worth enjoying and listening to, while the ccraze lasts.
