Im back!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Death is back for another round. Since Christmas break is here, I had a chance to write this review and perhaps more. But let me tell you the long, boring stroy on how I came to see this movie.
Ok, its not exactly long, its more boring. Call the theatre. Time playing: 3:00pm. Call someone to come. One of my cousins decided to come, since theres nothing better to do on December 30....
And heres what I think (not lying) MOVIE OF THE YEAR. No lie. Some folks go around thinking that sometimes movies are movies of the year cause they come out a day before the year actually ends. Well Lord of the Rings did, and well.....a brilliant film, but not quite to this extent.
The story is about Frank Abagnale Jr, played wonderfully by Leonardo DeCaprio, who has seemed to dissapeared after The Man in the Iron Mask and Titanic. I was quite sick of him to be honest, but Bam he comes back this year with two films (which are both getting Oscar buzz) Catch Me if You Can and the more gory, violent, oscar type movie Gangs of New York. But thats a different movie with a totally different concept. And Gangs only appeals to some audiences. Catch seems fitting for just about anyone.
Where was i? Oh yeah, Frankie Jr. Frank is a sad, quiet teenager who lives with his French mother (Nathalie Baye) and his war veteran father (Christopher Walken, an Excellent job by him by the way) in 1966. His dad, who teaches young Frank the ropes of being a con-man, divorces his wife, Paula, and when Frank Jr. is asked what parent he wants to live with, he runs away.
He lies and makes people believe hes a co-pilot, a doctor, a lawyer and even a substitute teacher. He starts cashing in fake cheques and gets loads of money for doing practicly nothing---except for being cool and smart in situations. The most enjoying part of this film is seeing Abagnales stratigies. Its fun. And entertaining, and isnt that what a movie is supposed to do?
Theres is also another character, Carl Hanratty, whos big pun is that no one can pronounce his last name. He is a FBI agent whos main job is to catch Abagnale, and his only wish would be to capture him. This character is played by Tom Hanks, but I consider him a side character. Although the greatest scenes are with Carl, he wasnt needed. Him and his own little story was nice, but the Abagnale story alone makes the film. I did applaude Hanks acting though. Always great.
So this movie was the years biggest accomplishment, and after Lord of the Rings I was sure I had my mind made up---but its changed.
And at first I was surprised this film was by Spielberg...but then I saw the level of excellence. It must be Spielberg.
