John Grisham has written some wonderful books, The Chamber I would say is not one of them.
The story
It is a story is about a new lawyer who defends a member of the Ku Klux Klan whose racism he despises, but is his client guilty? Adam Hall does not think so. Hence he makes it a mission of his life to fight for his grand father , when he found about him. He goes on to become a Lawyer and ends up with his case. He fights till the very end , trying every possible move. Lot of emotions involved..
The characters
The characters are strong on most parts. Adam Hall is admirable as a lawyer. Sam comes from a klan background family who have a anti-black drive. He kills intentionally but the one time he doesnt intend to kill, things get messed up due to his partner & he is caught. But he doesnt disclose the name of his aide and keeps the secret. You hate him and you love him. In the end you do end up sympathising with him
Plot-wise, The Chamber is full of seeming irrelevancies. The description about the chamber and how it works (death penalty in olden times) is excellent.
