Don't Want This Don!

DON is possibly the most hyped film of 2006. And the hype is truly necessary for a film which is this mediocre. Why go for a remake, Mr Farhan Akhtar, unless you can justify the act? Someone who’s as talented a film-maker as Farhan Akhtar didn’t really need a springboard to catapult himself to the league of filmwallahs who are only interested in getting the claps & the whistles of the chavanni chhaap audience! I know that I speak for many such film-buffs who, inspite of having no grudge against the populist fare, would like to be impressed by the new generation of film-makers who painstakingly care for nourishing sense & sensibility in cinema.

The original film, made in 1978, was anything but a classic. Everyone who has seen the film would remember it for the timeless panache portrayed with elan by Amitabh Bachchan in the double role. The film was tailormade to boost the star quality of this lead actor. Even the songs and the dialogues, which everyone talk about, suit the film perfectly because they were aptly projected by the charisma of Big B. So what was Farhan Akhtar attempting to do in a remake of this film beats me. Needless to say, I was thoroughly unimpressed. The cosmetic changes, as well as the outrageous twist in the tale, do a complete disservice to the film per se.

I save you folks from retelling the stale tale or dissecting the performances of the lead players. There are many reviewers on MouthShut who have done that already and would do so gladly in the future too. I hope Farhan Akhtar soon wakes up and makes sensible films once again!
