This is not just a movie review .A view of our society and film Industry too.
Before I start my review I would like to congratulate Madhavan for his plucky attempt of producing and acting in such a sturdy subject breaking his chocolate boy image. Also it is lucid that he distances himself from the cluster of young heroes of today who concentrate to give a hit movie rather than giving a good movie. I am happy to see Madhavan lining up behind Kamal and Prakashraj.
Remaking a Marathi film ‘Dombivli Fast’ the crew has given a quality Tamil movie ‘Evano Oruvan’.The most important thing about the movie is its plot. It is all about the portrayal of a man’s anger, who gets perturbed by the anti social elements in our society.
Anti-social elements? - Terrorism? Rowdism? NO. Who Else?
A lorry driver who asks Rs.100 for giving corporation water to public, A guy who gets loan submitting forged Docs, A shop owner who charges Rs.2 extra for a cool drink, A bike owner who parks his vehicle in the No-Parking area, A school which asks Donation for admission, A hospital which denies admission of an old lady, A drug dealer, and an unhygienic fast food. The wretched situation today, is that these are not treated as anti-social elements and they are considered as negligible mistakes. We fiddle with these things in our daily life and go. Few would get fuming, but wouldn’t fire. They have their own tribulations.
The director/producer has aptly titled the movie ‘Evano oruvan’ meaning someone! b*ecause only one in a lakh would dare to do as the hero of this movie does. Otherwise they would have named it ‘Nammil oruvan – One amongst Us’.:)
The other characters in the movie have also been handled wonderfully by the director. Scenes where the inspector asks his wife if they could lead a customary life with JUST his salary, Sangeeta expressing her frustration over his sensitive husband are very natural.
The Climax scene is a highlight. Madhavan, after shot by police in train tells the inspector with a smile in his face “One should die to get a window seat in the train. I am dieing .Let me go to the window seat and die”.(I have tried my best to translate that dialogue in English. Pls bear with me;)) He then slowly moves near window and closes his eyes in peace. Madhavan scores 100% in this scene. It shows he has matured as an actor.
The plot might exactly look like a Shankar’s but what differentiates this movie from Anniyan and Indian is that the hero in this movie is not a hero. He is a very normal person without any super powers who is too sensitive to endure the insensitive world around him. Also Shankar would insert all commercial elements in his movie but it seems that the director Nishikanth has meticulously avoided that here.
If you ask me if this movie would be a commercial hit, I would say NO because our people expect a fast screenplay, 4 songs including an item number, fights, comedy etc. We don’t encourage natural scripts as the Malayalam film industry does. Otherwise ‘Mahanadi’, ’Rhythm’ would have been great hits. ’Kadhal’ is an exception.
In a nutshell, a good plot but not effectively translated into a movie. Don’t watch it as a movie for entertainment .Watch it as our society.you will like it.
