The Golden Years...

Hi, people, I am back! Your support and love has drawn me back to my first love, Writing, specially on MouthShut.

This time I am picking up a complex topic. To list the top 10 Hollywood movies of 1960’s is a tough job as anyone of us have hardly seen some.

But channels like HBO, Star Movies and TNT showed us some real classics. I have seen all the five movies that I am listing. I took some efforts to know the name of their director and know the year of release. Now I have compiled an exhaustive list.

Let’s have them one-by-one:

5) 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968

It is the year 2001. Man’s thirst for space knowledge is growing more and more. Many satellites and space camera are sending pictures and information of the space back to the NASA headquarters. But then, suddenly a distorted picture of the moon comes to the headquarters, which puzzles everyone down on earth. Everyone seems to ask the same question, ’’What is it?’’

I have read the novel of Arthur C. Clarke many times. It is called the same as the movie, 2001 - A Space Odyssey.

It is one of the best Sci-fi movie I ever saw of yesteryears. The story is about a mysterious, obviously artificial, artifact buried on the moon. Then the space craft called HAL moves out into outer space to know more about it. And then the excitement starts.

It is a very good movie, beautifully directed by Stanley Kubrick. It certainly is one of the best movies of all time.

4) Psycho 1960

The scene is set. It is midnight and is raining heavily. The thunder and lightning isn’t making matters good. And then your car gets stuck up and you say, ’’How worse can happen to me?’’ But even worse waits for you inside Bates Motel. You go in to search for a room, and feel yourself to be lucky as you get one. But this night could be the last one you ever saw!

Alfred Hitchcock gives us an another classic thriller. I saw his other movies like Scissors and Rope. But this one is far better than others.

The character, Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perskin is one of the best ever performed. This character still haunts hitch-hikers at night. Many just don’t want to stay at a remote motel at night time. This was the extent of horror this movie created in the US.

All in all, this one is my favourite. So are the sequels.

3) Spartacus 1960

What is the power of small? Many would say, small is weak. But the same small things can do really big stuff. The small rats can burrow a hole in the mountains and make it fall. The small termits can run down large cottages. The small ants can give you a sting of your life. And those small mosquitoes can take away your life.

This movie portrays that power of small, which we humans call low-class people or slaves.

It is a movie directed by Stanley Kubrick, who tells us the story about a slave called Spartacus. The movie is based on a novel by Howard Fast.

This movie included some real towering performances. The legendary Kirk Douglas plays the title role. And there were some other actors who gave the performance of their life.

This movie is about a slave Spartacus who leads a violent revolt against the decadent Roman empire.

The movie is beautifully picturised, specially the war scenes. They are just too good.

It is truly a work of art.

2) Lawrence Of Arabia 1962

This is the most beautiful movie I ever saw.

David Lean directs this superb movie. The movie is about a British journalist called Lawrence (Peter O’Toole) who goes to Saudi Arabia to learn about the political scenario there. He stays with Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness) to get some writing material. And then he witnesses some barbaric and tortorous wars and battles. He also sees human compassion and love. It is about the journey of a journalist in the desert.

This movie also stars one of my most favourite actor called Omar Sharif. He plays the role of a character called Sherif Kharish. He performed it with class and genius. But the winner was surely Peter O’Toole. His performance was very classy in nature too.

This movie is from the same creators of the other war epic called The Bridge On The River Kwai. This movie too oozes the same charm.

Watch this movie and tell me how you liked it.

1) The Innocents 1961

I saw this movie after I have seen The Sixth Sense, and then I came to know from where Manoj Shyamalan got the inspiration to make such a nice movie. What I concluded was, Manoj would have seen The Innocents before making his owns.

This movie is my favourite thriller movie. It is bit slow in pace, but it is too good.

The movie is based on the novel by Henry James. It is directed by Jack Clayton who gives us a true piece of art.

The movie is about a young woman called Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr) who goes out to look for a job. She do get one as a maid for two children. But she finds that there is something wrong with the girl. Later, she also comes to know that the boy too is not well. They both are held by evil souls. She then tries to drive the evil out of their bodies.

The creepy feeling is maintained throughout the movie. The slowness of the movie adds to the spook.

My mother liked this movie very much, so did I. This one is surely the best from the 60’s of Hollywood.

Well, these were my favourite 5 from the 60’s. I do have some other favourites like:

The Great Escape

The Hustler

The Graduate

Z

and many more.

This decade also saw the release of a movie called Midnight Cowboy (1969), which became the First X-rated Movie to win a Best Film Oscars! Fascinating, isn’t it?

Well, I should end my review here. I assure you that I will be here forever. I don’t want to leave MS again.

Thank you people for supporting me.

It is your love that drives me write again and again and again.

Ciao then!
