When you speak of acting and Indian cinema you are bound to relate one name instinctively that’s Kamal Hassan.One cannot restrict this legendary actor to numbers, listing his top 5 or top 10 performance would not be practically possible.
Here I give you a generic review on his best performances. I see know other actor scaling such huge heights as he has achieved.* A three times national award winner, a record holder of the most filmfare awards, three times tamil nadu state award, three times andhra state award, 7 times his movie has been sent to the oscars for the best foreign language movie etc etc *. Y ou can keep filling pages when it comes to awards and Kamal hassan. Being a hardcore Kamal fan I would like to share my thoughts on his best performances, as in my point of view.
NAYAKAN:
Rated as one of the best movies ever made in Indian history, bagged him a National award for the best actor in 1987. I feel this is his best performance till date. He would have showed tremendous transformation of his character from being a youngster, to a middle aged man and then an aged Nayakar baba. He would have shown distinctive changes in his body language and voice modulation to differentiate the three characterisations. His performance during his sons demise, the climax, wifes death are all of the top draw.
INDIAN:
Being the perfectionist he is, he donned a special make up for the Indian thatha character. He would have excelled in the movie with the smallest of expressions in his face with the make up on. To demostrate such little nuances in his face with expression is his eyes proved that he is the best in the business. He brought new dimension to acting with his special make up on. The scenes where he speaks to the public through television and the preluding scenes to her daughters death stand out.
MOONDRAMPIRAI:
This movie bagged Kamal hassan his first National award and it made the whole nation take a notice of this great actor. The movie also remade in hindi as Sadma was a great success. His acting in the climax, stills stand out as one of the astonishing piece of acting that Indian cinema has ever witnessed. Even now nearly after twenty years after its release, this movie makes a huge impact on the viewers mind because of his acting. My mother ends up crying everytime she watches this movie.
ANBE SIVAM:
Personally I rate this film as the best movie made in tamil cinema in the recent years. His portrayal of the character as Sivam was simply astounding. His special make up and the huge glassed that he wore for the character gave us the impression that he was not Kamla hassan , but somebody else. The scenes along with madhavan where they discuss of communism, god, love would all be remembered for his fluent acting with madhavn giving him apt company. It stands out as one his best performances.
GUNA:
The scene where Kamal speaks to his doctor, where in he delivers the dialogue moving along in circles within the hospital alone is an apt example for his acting skills. As he gradually increases the speed in which he speaks, he would have simultaneously increased his speed moving around in circles and would end up hitting against the wall and would faint off. It’s indeed a breath taking scene. He would have excelled in this movie which shows him physically very strong with the mind of a child. Other scenes where he speaks to abhirami about their marriage, where the little bird gets killed, in the climax after abhirami dies are all scenes that proves his prodigious acting skills.
These five movies are just a part of my list which speaks of his performance. I have chosen movies where he has given a very good performance on the whole. Obviously you cannot find a movie where he would have let you down as an actor. He is indeed a rare talent. I will come up with the continuation of this article very soon.
