This is a funny topic to write on actually! with bollywood having a hit to flop ration of 10:90, its difficult to pin point 5 worst movies made in the 1990s, but there are couple of movies which I consider as absolutely worst
movies. Well, here goes my top 5 worst movies of 1990s.
1.HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN?!...
This was the one that started the culture reversal phenomena in India. I really don’t know how this movie went on to become the highest grosser in Indian cinema history. The movie...lesser said the better. In simple words: three marriages and a engagement! This song-a-minute extravaganza boasted of 14 songs. okay, I might agree that Madhuri looked phenomenal and songs were quite hummable...but the movie in itself was a drab. Especially foolish is the part where the dog re-unites 2 estranged lovers! This movie certainly made me answer the question hum aapke kuchch nahi tho hi behter hoga!
2. DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAAYENGE
Another huge grosser...another dud for me. The first half is bearable and few good scenes are there. Shah Rukh and Kajol’s chemistry on screen is good. But the second half of the movie is a absolute dud and a bore. It looked more or less like a rehash of hum aapke hain koun?. The story...a girl and a boy meet on Eurail, fall in love, girl is typical cultured girl, pop gets angry...immediately shifts to India, boy follows suit, wins over everybody and rushes off with his bride. so nice huh?!; What saved the movie was a good background score by Jatin-Lalit. To me this was a crap story, especially, the second half when the boy comes over to India to win
her bride. The ending is so melodramatic and weepy.. A definite movie on my top worst films list!
3. KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI.
This movie was worser than the 2 movies mentioned above. This was a nonsense carried to far. Betty loves Archie loves Veronica, Veronica dies leaving 8 letters to her daughter to be given on each birthday, and even names her Betty.The 8 year daughter then wanders to unite Betty and Archie!The first half was a complete Riverdale style campus with cool, yo! etc, being the lingo! Shah Rukh fails to impress as the college going guy. This was a movie with cliches galore.....some of them were:
- you can reach simla from bombay within a song gets over
2.Shah Rukh doesnt know that kajol is in the camp, yet magically brings out her dupatta when she is leaving.
- The frequency at which people see shooting stars in the movie!
I found the 8 year old girl doing too much in the movie and frankly I am yet to see such a matured, thoughtful girl of 8. Indeed, I felt in the movie kuch bhi nahi hua!
4. HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN
Another horrid movie! a remake of Ramayana had nothing to boast of! So we have a happy family, living together, eating together, and ofcourse singing together! Everybody is so sugary and sweet in the movie, each has a halo around his/her head. So much to prove that they are happy. Another movie with songs, marriages and this time honeymoons! that also, everybody has to go together. This seriously accounts for one of the worst movies made by anyone. The acting was pathetic, so was the story line, and the music was itself a big disappointment. Overall, 3+ hours of absolute boredom!
5.MOHOBBATEIN
God knows why Aditya Chopra made this movie. Chinese Torture is what I call this movie. 3 hours 40 minutes of love, love and more love. The story....well....its about three guys falling in love with three girls, and their sir in the college who also fell in love with the principal’s daughter, and the daughter commits suicide. So the sir wants these three guys to succeed in love! Amitabh Bachchan was the only saving grace of the movie, Aishwarya looked bored to death in the movie! The songs of the movie were quite good, and was the only reason, I could sustain the movie for so long.Otherwise it is nothing but 3 hours of only batein!
Surprisingly, all the movies which I have in the top 5 worst movies went on to become huge hits and ran long in the theatres. But for me, nothing could be as crap as these five movies were. Ofcourse with this I could have added
hundreds of mithunda movies , but they are better left not mentioned. These are my worst films for me...I would love hear some of MS members hate list too!
