CNG: Regarding Insurance & RTO certification Edit I spent close to Rs 7000 a month(64 km a day in bad traffic conditions) on petrol under the current prices and desparetly need an alternative. I enquired with several CNG dealers and the cost of conversion kit with 60L tank is approximately Rs 19500(in Bangalore). I am fine with this but two questions bother me:
1) Do I need an RTO certification post installation - if so what is the purpose of this. Without the certification - can I not run the car legally as per the Motor Act?
[By the way the chalan for this certification is Rs 165 only in Blore. But most dealers charge Rs 2000 and bulk of it goes into greasing the palms of the RTO official. I am not prepared to cough up the bribe in any case]
2) My insurance company will charge a premium for the gas conversion. They arent telling me how much without performing an inspection. Tata AIG tells me they do not need RTO inspection and they will do their own before ascertaining the inspection. Question is in the event of an accident, will Tata AIG hold me up or refuse to settle a claim because I hadnt reported the CNG upgrade. How does this work? Am I paying a premium to insure the kit or the car becuase of a percieved higher risk?
3) I drive a 5 year old Opel Corsa 1.4 GLS. Does anyone have a good or bad experience in using conversion kits in this car. My dealer tells me Ford Ikon is known to have problems.
Are there some experts on this? It seems like a lot of people are making money in this chaos. No doubt CNG is the best option for us in the prevalent conditions.
