The Department of Pharmacology since its inception (1964) has been engaged in teaching and research. The main thrust areas are Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmaco-epidemiology, Trace Elements in Health and Disease, Chemotherapy, Experimental Evaluation of Known and Unknown drugs, Neuropsychopharmacology and Immunopharmacology. In addition, the department organizes Extension Lectures of visiting faculty members from India and abroad (eg., Dr. Gyurgy Blasko, a Hungarian Scholar, visited on 19-20th February 1990). ICMR, CSIR and PPRD sanctioned research schemes many a times. Lot of research papers from this department may be found quoted in textbooks, reviews and monographs in various disciplines of science and medicine. Till now, the department awarded more than three dozen MD degrees, two D.Sc. Degrees and many M.Phils and PhDs. (including Chemistry) under Interdisciplinary Research Programs. Teachers from this department excelled in their core fields. Prof. P. N. Saxena, (Founder of the department) delivered many memorial lectures (like Dr. B. N. Ghosh Oration) and presided various addresses. Prof. P. N. Saxena and Prof. K. P. Gupta were awarded Common Wealth and Wellcome Trust Research Fellowships. Prof. Om Chandra received Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship to work in Germany and Fellowships of the Indian Academy of Medical Specialties. Like wise, Prof. K. C. Singhal has also been awarded Fellowships of the Indian Academy of Medical Specialties and Indian Academy of Neurosciences. Many national and international awards were conferred to him. He was the coordinator and Principal Investigator of ICMR Task Force on Monitoring of ADR in India, Visiting Professor to the Health Science Center, University of Tennessee, Memphis during 1995, the John Autian Distinguished International Visiting Professor at University of Tennessee at Memphis, USA during 2000. Being the Founder fellow of Indian Indian Academy of Neurosciences, I.M.A. Academy of Medical Specialties and the Indian Pharmacological Society, he at present, is the Honorary Consultant to WHO Collaborating Center for ADR Monitoring, Uppsala, Sweden and President of Society of Pharmacovigilance, India. Other members of the department have also to their credit many research papers in various national and international journals. In 1999, Dr. Syed Ziaur Rahman was awarded the prestigious Servier Young Investigator Award of the Institut De Recherches Internationales Servier from France. Being a young faculty member, he is the life-members of various academic bodies, author/editor of three books and four magazines. Lot of research papers and articles have also been published by him in various national and international journals. At present, he is the honorary treasurer of Ibn Sina Academy and Associate Editor of its newsletter (NISA).
