Kihim is ideally located for Mumbaiites to visit over a week-end or a day off. The quickest way to get there is to take the catamaran from the Gateway of India across the harbour to the Mandwe jetty on the mainland. Please be careful while embarking and disembarking as the facilities are quite pathetic and if you are not careful you could get hurt.
Kihim beach itself is pretty picturesque and certainly worth a days visit. I particularly like the two island fortresses that you can see from the beach there. The bigger of the two, Khanderi, now houses a lighthouse to guide fishermen and other big ships as it stands at the mouth of Bombay harbour. The smaller of the two, Undheri, also has a fort but is now largely abandoned. It has always been my dream to request a fisherman from the nearby village of Nagaon to take me to these two islands. But all I have met during my visits there have either asked for too much money or plain refused. If any one has better luck please let me know.
