The Plot

It’s the 1930s, the era of the Great Depression in New York when America plunged into severe economic crisis that threw its millions of people into poverty & unemployment. In the middle of the depression is the beautiful entertainer Ann Darrow (NAOMI WATTS) who’s also struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile, documentary filmmaker Carl Denham’s (JACK BLACK) zealous proposal to make a picture of legendary creatures in a mysterious island is turned down by movie moghuls. Cunning & determined to make his picture, Carl refuses to take no for an answer and flees with stolen reels. Desperate for a leading lady, Carl’s eyes falls on an equally desperate Ann. Lying about the project, Carl lures her into the cast and also manages to rope others in the crew including the leading man Bruce Baxter (KYLE CHANDLER) & playwright Jack Driscoll (ADRIEN BRODY) who are all promised that they will be shooting in Singapore! Carl finally embarks on a sea voyage along with the unsuspecting crew to ’Singapore’ evading his arrest warrant by angry producers in nick of time. Hardly did he know that they will meet upon an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime.

The Review

Amazing movie, is all I can say.

King Kong’s style is E.T., Titanic, Godzilla & Jurassic Park put together!

Attention Steven Spielberg & James Cameron: make way for Peter Jackson. He matches your magic frame for frame!

The attention to details is simply cool - be it the costumes of people in the 1930s, the vehicles, the buildings, the ship, dinosaurs or even King Kong himself.

Visuals are mesmerizing. That shouldn’t be a surprise because that is a trademark of Peter Jackson’s movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

About the special effects? If King Kong does not win an Oscar in this category I will embark on a plane voyage to America & do the third degree torture on the jury :)

Fortunately, the movie isn’t all about brilliant graphics. We see a budding love develop between Ann Darrow & Jack Driscoll, hilarious narcism shown by the haughty actor Bruce Baxter, the endearing scenes between Kong & Ann, the chilling encounter by the crew with the tribals & the predatory creatures in the island or even the final showdown of Kong in New York that moves your heart.

Performances are impressive.

The leading actor of the movie (after King Kong ofcourse!) Australian Naomi Watts is quite beautiful with an acting talent to boot. She looks so much like fellow Australian Nicole Kidman. It’s a pleasant surprise to learn that they are best friends since childhood in real life!

Other significant actors in the movie like Adrien Brody, Jack Black & Kyle Chandler also do justice to their roles.

If not for the credible performances from the entire cast, there wouldn’t have been that spark which endears the viewers to the movie.

The movie subtly impresses on the viewers not to tamper with Nature and use it for personal gains, like its predecessor Jurassic Park.

Attention: there are some truly gory scenes. So be prepared to hold onto those sides of your chair tightly before you watch ’em!

But I must say that this movie is for all ages. Watch it in theatre for the big time effect.

Final word

Can I give a 6/5 rating?!

King Kong will rule the box office for a long period and hopefully grab some of those enviable statuettes during the Academy awards extravaganza.
