I am a resident of Delhi and in my enthusiasm for a greener environment, I installed a solar water heater at my home. I thought I would utilize on the free solar energy and save on electricity bills.
Well, I have had it for almost 6 months now and I very unhappy with my decision. Let me state out the details in points below -
My review is for the Kingsun Solar heater(https://kingsunsolarproducts.com/). Though they have a highly supportive service staff, their product is simply poor. I do not know how the solar heaters of other brands measure up to them.
I live in Delhi which sees a high requirement of hot water during the months of Nov-Feb. Its been more than a month for me using this product under the hot water requirement criteria.
We are a family of 4, and have a 300 liter capacity heater. Again I do not know how the heaters of lower or higher capacity would perform.
This heater comes installed with two heating elements (of 3KV each) for the additional push required on cloudy/foggy days.
The whole setup cost us about Rs 80, 000 (including installation, piping and all)
Moving on to the usage experience -
From my experience of the past one and a half months I can safely claim that the heater DOES NOT provide hot water suitable for bathing in the mornings (with the heating elements NOT turned on). Usually Delhi winter mornings would see a temp of about 15 degrees. On its own, the heater cannot provide water higher than 22 degrees.
In the early evenings, with the sun having shone in its full glory throughout the afternoon, the temperature of the water barely reaches 27-28 degrees. Which again in my opinion is not hot enough
With the two heating elements switched on(which practically renders it a normal water heater-6kv of electricity required), the four of us are barely able manage a bucket of decently hot water (at about 35 degrees) each. On some days, even this seems difficult. Please note that the thermostat of the two elements have been set at about 55 degrees.
The biggest problem with these heaters is that we have to waste a ton of cold water (resting in the pipes and system) before any usable hot water starts coming out. Each of us has to let out at least a bucket of water before we can step in the shower. Not matter how hard you try, this always leads to sizable wastage of water and that really pinches.
So basically its an expensive water heater that does not effectively use the free solar energy, which leads to massive wastage of water and which still does not provide sufficient hot water. We shudder with the thought of our condition in the severe December end and January start days when the sun remains reclusive.
Oh, and top of that, their management still hasnt been able to provide us with the solar subsidy and the monthly subsidy that we were supposed to receive in our electricity bills.
My review is strictly specific to the product I had used with its mentioned specification. I do not know how other products would fare.
This is simply to put forward the unsatisfied situation of me and my family and probably someone out there would benefit from it.
Thanks
